Medical Advice before Taking a Spaceflight

The following is excerpted from a feature that appeared last December in the medical journal BMJ:

As access to space travel for personal or employment reasons increases, clinicians may be faced with new medical challenges and questions in their daily practice. For example: How long after a hip replacement can my patient safely embark on a ballistic two?hour flight to Australia? Can my patient with stable angina and a pacemaker for complete heart block participate in a suborbital Virgin Galactic flight? What is the maximum allowable time that my patient with osteoporosis can spend on a planned vacation at a space hotel? Of course, all physicians will not be expected to be experts in space medicine, just as they are currently not experts in the physiology of airplane flight, but they will have to understand how it affects their patients.

Medical Conditions Associated with Spaceflight and Potential Countermeasures

Motion sickness:
Antinauseant

Conjunctival irritation (foreign body in the eye):
Removal of foreign body

Radiation exposure:
Keep as low as reasonably achievable

Hypothetical Spaceflight Considerations for Common Medical Entities

Gastrointestinal reflux:
May become exacerbated because of lack of gravity

Psychiatric problems:
May become exacerbated (or possibly improve)

Kurdish rebel leader sees Turkey pullout by August: media

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Jailed Kurdish militant leader Abdullah Ocalan is proposing to withdraw his fighters from Turkey by August if Ankara pushes through reforms under a draft plan to end a 28-year insurgency, media reports said on Wednesday.

Imprisoned on Imrali island near Istanbul since 1999, Ocalan has since October been discussing a deal with Turkey's government to end a conflict that has killed 40,000 people since his Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) took up arms in 1984.

Under the plan, sent to Turkey's main pro-Kurdish party as well as the PKK leadership, the rebels would begin a formal ceasefire on March 21, the Kurdish New Year, said the Sabah and Star newspapers, which are close to the government.

The PKK is estimated to have around 2,000 fighters in Turkey, with several thousand more in bases in northern Iraq.

Their withdrawal from Turkish territory under the plan would be completed by August 15, the 29th anniversary of the start of a conflict that has destabilized Turkey and held back the development of its mainly Kurdish southeast.

The 20-page "road map", handwritten by Ocalan, has not been published and the accuracy of the reports could not be confirmed. They said Ocalan was due to finalize it in mid-March.

A member of parliament from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), which received the plan on Tuesday, played down the timetable in the Turkish media and said no decisions had been made.

Idris Baluken told Reuters that Ocalan had outlined his ideas in the document and had asked the BDP as well as the PKK leadership in northern Iraq and in Europe to respond with their thoughts in the next two weeks.

"Ocalan wants to know whether the government is sincere or not," Baluken said. "We want to talk positively but we have not made much progress politically."

POLITICAL REFORMS

The success of the process depends on Turkey passing reforms increasing the rights of a Kurdish minority numbering about 15 million - around 20 percent of Turkey's population.

Ocalan's plan contained no demand for Kurdish autonomy, media reports said.

"Nobody should stand up and demand anything that is aimed at harming our national unity," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told reporters late on Tuesday.

"If they put down their weapons and leave our country, there are many places in the world they can go," he said.

During his decade in power, Erdogan has pushed through reforms boosting Kurdish cultural rights. But Kurdish politicians want wider moves, including new constitutional guarantees for the Kurds and more Kurdish language education.

Ocalan's plan seeks recognition of Kurdish identity in the constitution and the strengthening of local administration - steps that would follow a PKK withdrawal - as well the release of thousands of Kurdish activists jailed pending trial on charges of links to the PKK, Sabah reported.

Erdogan is taking a political risk with the process, given the strident opposition of nationalists to negotiating with a man they dub the "baby killer" and "monster of Imrali".

Opposition to the process may also emerge among Kurds.

Selahattin Demirtas, leader of the Kurdish BDP, sought to assuage worries on both sides.

"Turks should not be worried that Turkey will be divided and Kurds should not be worried that they will not get their rights and freedoms," he told reporters.

PREVIOUS CEASEFIRES

The PKK has sporadically declared unilateral ceasefires in the past, and in 1999 it withdrew its militants from Turkey. However, several hundred of its fighters died in clashes during that pullout and Erdogan has said this would not be repeated.

The final part of the three-stage plan envisages the closure of PKK camps in Iraq and the return to Turkey of PKK members who have not been involved in armed attacks.

Comments from both sides suggest that fighters would not be amnestied but remain in exile.

The PKK took up arms in 1984 with the aim of carving out a Kurdish state, but subsequently moderated its goal to limited self-rule. It is designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and European Union.

The militants have pledged allegiance to Ocalan but voiced caution about the prospects of rapid progress towards a deal, criticizing continued military operations in southeast Turkey and northern Iraq, where thousands of the militants are based.

Militant attacks have tailed off since the process began, and Demirtas said an unofficial ceasefire was in effect. But the PKK said on Wednesday four of its militants had been killed in air strikes by Turkish warplanes in northern Iraq on Tuesday.

Among initial steps under the process, the PKK could release more than a dozen captured Turkish security forces personnel.

However, senior PKK commander Duran Kalkan said any such release would depend on what steps Turkey takes. "Nobody should expect this from us unilaterally," Kalkan said in an interview with the PKK-linked Firat news agency.

"If the (military) operations continue, the guerrilla operations will continue," he said in further comments published on Wednesday. "If the process does not develop everybody should know the response will be an intensification of the fighting."

In talks with Kurdish politicians at the weekend, Ocalan said Turkey could become as unstable as Syria or Iraq if steps were not taken to end the insurgency.

Barnes & Noble dispatches Nook Bluetooth speaker through FCC

Nook brings Bluetooth speaker through FCC,

Barnes & Noble and its Nook may be the subject of many a rumor of late, but that's not stopping the tablet-maker from its business -- which now includes Bluetooth speakers, apparently. We just spotted this previously unseen bad boy lurking in the FCC's antechambers packing the 2.4GHz Bluetooth bands and a rechargeable battery. That'd give some portable audio accompaniment to your Nook HD or other Bluetooth device (like the iPhone and iPod it was also tested with), though we're not sure how B&N's planning to market it. There's now a listing sans photos or other info parked on its site (see MC link), so you might soon be able to read yourself to sleep with that free book.

Blizzard eases U.S. Plains drought but crops need more moisture

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A blizzard this week in the drought-stricken U.S. Plains will moisten soil for major crops, but the snow storm made it difficult to feed cattle and reach some cow herds, an agricultural meteorologist said on Wednesday.

Andy Karst of World Weather Inc said the blast of winter weather dropped a foot of snow in many areas with up to 19 inches in the Texas Panhandle on Monday.

"It will benefit most areas but parts of western Kansas and eastern Colorado missed out on the storm, so it remains too dry there," Karst said. "There was probably a lot of stress to livestock."

In more good news for farmers, agricultural meteorologists predict light rain in some areas later this week and a larger storm in early March. They say significant winter rainfall and snow have so far eliminated the drought, the worst in 50 years in the United States, in an area roughly from Illinois eastward.

A combination of rain and snow early this week left roughly 6 inches to 18 inches of snow in a widespread area of the western and southern Midwest corn and soybean belt and most of the hard red winter wheat region in the Plains.

The snowstorm contains about 0.50 inch to 1.50 inches of water that will be added to dry soils in the region, helping the U.S. winter wheat crop when it begins its growth spurt this spring.

But more moisture will be needed in April and May to nurse the crop to maturity and to aid the soon-to-be-seeded corn and soybean crops, meteorologists and crop experts have said.

Commodity Weather Group meteorologist Joel Widenor said very light showers would move into the Northern Plains and dry areas of the western Midwest next week and a larger storm was expected in the first or second weeks of March.

Widenor said it will cover the far southeastern Plains, Delta, southern and eastern Midwest but the recently wet areas of the U.S. Southeast should remain drier.

He said the March storm also would bring a chance for more rainfall to the central and southeastern U.S. Plains but the "forecast has slipped drier than yesterday."

The weekly Drought Monitor report issued February 21 by a group of state and federal climatologists showed 18.66 percent of the contiguous United States was suffering from extreme drought, up from 17.71 percent a week earlier. The percentage in exceptional drought, the worst category, rose to 6.66 percent from 6.61 percent the previous week.

Kansas wheat farmers welcomed the winter snowstorm, but the drought stress on the winter wheat crop from seeding time last fall until now probably has harmed some of it beyond repair, experts have said.

Don Keeney, meteorologist for MDA Earthsat Weather, said that as of early February, roughly 4 inches to 6 inches of rain were needed in Kansas, the top producer of hard red winter wheat, to bring the state out of drought status.

Up to 8 inches were needed in a pocket of severe dryness in northeastern Kansas, a big corn- and grain sorghum-growing area. Similar amounts were needed in Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa and Missouri and northern Illinois and Indiana.

Eight killed in fighting between Congo rebel factions: sources

KINSHASA (Reuters) - At least eight people were killed - most of them civilians - when fighting erupted between rival factions of eastern Congo's most powerful rebel group, a U.N.-backed radio station and a local source said.

The clashes deep inside territory controlled by the M23 insurgents risk undermining regionally-backed peace talks in neighbouring Uganda between the fighters and Democratic Republic of Congo's government.

They appear to be the first serious sign of tensions within the group, which caused regional shockwaves in November when it routed government troops and pushed past U.N. peacekeepers to briefly seize Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu.

U.N.-backed Radio Okapi said the fighting broke out on Sunday in the rebel stronghold of Rutshuru between fighters loyal to M23's military chief, Sultani Makenga, and supporters of warlord Bosco Ntaganda.

Ntaganda triggered the insurgency last April when he quit his post as a Congolese army general, taking hundreds of soldiers with him.

The eight people died when a rocket hit a bar in the centre of the town, the radio station reported.

A local businessman told Reuters on condition of anonymity that he saw the eight dead bodies and said the fighting was between rival elements of M23.

M23 spokesman Bertrand Bisimwa acknowledged here had been fighting in Rutshuru but denied any factional split, instead blaming another rebel group, Rwanda's FDLR.

"It wasn't our men fighting, it was the FDLR, unfortunately right in the centre of Rutshuru," he said, without elaborating "Everything is calm in our ranks."

No one from the FDLR could be reached to comment.

WAR CRIMES FUGITIVE

Nicknamed "The Terminator", Rwandan-born Ntaganda is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes including the massacre of civilians during a previous Tutsi rebellion.

The United Nations says he controls the M23 rebellion, but M23 has repeatedly denied his involvement in the group.

Congo's eastern borderlands have suffered nearly two decades of conflict stoked by ethnic and political enmities and fighting over the region's rich resources of gold, tin, tungsten and coltan - a precious metal used to make mobile phones.

Successive attacks by myriad rebel and militia groups and government soldiers have made the region notorious among rights groups for mass killings, recruitment of child soldiers and rapes used as a weapon of war.

Political analysts say stalled talks between M23 and the Congolese government in Uganda could be exposing old grievances between Makenga and Ntaganda, who have previously found themselves in different factions of rebel movements in Congo.

A split within M23 could undermine peace negotiations, particularly if one faction chooses to continue fighting.

The group accuses the government of failing to hold up its end of a March 23, 2009 peace deal - from which it takes its name - and has sought to gain popular support by tapping into public frustration over the slow pace of reforms in Congo.

M23 has controlled Rutshuru since July and has made it a central administrative zone for the movement. The town, in North Kivu province, is close to the Ugandan and Rwandan borders.

(AP) ? The terror lasted less than two minutes: Smoke poured from a hot air balloon carrying sightseers on a sunrise flight over the ancient city of Luxor, it burst in a flash of flame and then plummeted about 1,000 feet to earth. A farmer watched helplessly as tourists trying to escape the blazing gondola leaped to their deaths.

Nineteen people were killed Tuesday in what appeared to be the deadliest hot air ballooning accident on record. A British tourist and the Egyptian pilot, who was badly burned, were the sole survivors.

The tragedy raised worries of another blow to the nation's vital tourism industry, decimated by two years of unrest since the 2011 revolution that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak. The southern city of Luxor has been hit hard, with vacant hotel rooms and empty cruise ships.

It also prompted accusations that authorities have let safety standards decline amid the political turmoil and infighting, although civil aviation officials said the balloon had been inspected recently and that the pilot may have been to blame, jumping out rather than stopping the fire.

Authorities suspended hot air balloon flights, a popular tourist attraction here, while investigators determined the cause.

The balloon was carrying 20 tourists ? from France, Britain, Belgium, Japan and Hong Kong ? and an Egyptian pilot on a flight over Luxor, 510 kilometers (320 miles) south of Cairo, officials said. The flights provide spectacular views of the ancient Karnak and Luxor temples and the Valley of the Kings, the burial ground of Tutankhamun and other pharaohs.

According to initial indications, the balloon was in the process of landing after 7 a.m. when a cable got caught around a helium tube and a fire erupted, according to an investigator with the state prosecutor's office.

The balloon then ascended rapidly, the investigator said. The fire detonated a gas canister and the balloon plunged about 300 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, crashing in a sugar cane field outside al-Dhabaa village just west of Luxor, a security official said.

Both the investigator and the security official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

"I saw tourists catching fire and they were jumping from the balloon," said Hassan Abdel-Rasoul, a farmer in al-Dhabaa. "They were trying to flee the fire but it was on their bodies."

One of those on fire was a visibly pregnant woman, he said.

Amateur video taken from another balloon and shown on Al-Jazeera Mubasher television showed the balloon's final moments.

Smoke is seen rising for several seconds from the gondola, silhouetted against the risen sun. The balloon itself catches fire with a flash, and in an instant, it bursts and falls as a fireball to the ground, trailing smoke. Egyptians on the balloon filming the scene can be heard crying and gasping in horror at the sight.

The bodies of the tourists were scattered across the field around the remnants of the balloon, as rescue officials collected the remains.

The crash immediately killed 18, according to Luxor Gov. Ezzat Saad. Two Britons and the pilot were taken to a hospital, but one of the Britons died of his injuries soon after.

Among the dead were nine tourists from Hong Kong, four Japanese ? including a couple in their 60s ? two French, a Belgian and a second Briton, according to Egyptian officials, although there were conflicting reports on the nationality of the 19th victim.

The toll surpasses what was believed by ballooning experts to be the deadliest accident in the sport's 200-year history: In 1989, 13 people were killed when their hot air balloon collided with another over the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs.

Luxor has seen crashes in the past. In 2009, 16 tourists were injured when their balloon struck a cellphone transmission tower. A year earlier, seven tourists were injured in a similar crash.

After the 2009 accident, Egypt suspended hot air balloon flights for several months and tightened safety standards. Pilots were given more training, and a landing spot was designated for the balloons.

The head of the Civil Aviation Administration, Mohammed Sherif, told The Associated Press at the scene of the crash that the pilot had just renewed his license in January.

"Each time we renew the license, we check up the balloon and we test the pilot," Sherif said.

An aviation official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk to reporters, blamed the pilot, saying initial results of the investigation showed he jumped out when the fire began, instead of shutting off valves that would have prevented the gas canister from exploding.

But the crash raised accusations that standards have fallen. Mohammed Osman, head of the Luxor's Tourism Chamber, blamed civil aviation authorities, who are in charge of licensing and inspecting balloons, accusing them of negligence.

"I don't want to blame the revolution for everything, but the laxness started with the revolution," he said. "These people are not doing their job, they are not checking the balloons and they just issue the licenses without inspection."

The Civil Aviation Ministry, like much of the government administration, has seen political disputes since President Mohammed Morsi came to power in June as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

The ministry was long dominated by military officers or former officers, some of whom have resented control by a civilian president, particularly one from the Muslim Brotherhood. In other ministries, observers say Brotherhood members have been appointed, or included as volunteers, in many posts.

One civil aviation ministry official told the AP that standards have fallen since civilians were brought in to some middle-ranking positions. The official said inspections have become more lax, taking place once a month instead of weekly. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to talk about the industry.

The crash added to the woes for residents of Luxor. Scared off by the turmoil and tenuous security following the uprising, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion. Last year saw a slight rise, but most tourists go to the beach resorts of the Red Sea, staying away from Nile Valley sites like Luxor.

That has been devastating for the local economy, with some government estimates saying that 75 percent of the labor force is connected to tourism. Luxor's hotels are about 25 percent full in what is supposed to be the peak of the winter season.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared with 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

Mohammed Haggag, owner of Viking, a company that runs seven balloons in Luxor, said the flight shutdown meant that the whole industry was suffering for one pilot's mistake.

"Why the mass punishment? Do you stop all flights when you have a plane crash?" he said. "You will cut the livelihoods for nearly 3,000 human beings who live on this kind of tourism."

Khaled Wanis, the owner of a shop selling tourist trinkets near Luxor Temple, said the past two years have been the worst he has ever seen.

"I can spend a week or 10 days before a customer knocks my door," he said. "Since I heard the news today, I felt ache in my heart.

"The general feeling is that Egypt is hard to visit and this is not a safe place to visit. The accident will only add to this feeling," Wanis said. "We are begging for tourists. Now, they get killed, so what do you expect?"

Oscars Red Carpet: Past Fashion Fails! PHOTOS

Oscars fashion is always a hot topic, good or bad, people like to gab. This week I am bringing you Oscars Red Carpet photos ? the fashion fail edition from previous years! I also want to hear your thoughts on who is going to make headlines for bad fashion choices – Jennifer Lawrence anyone?   Of course there have been many fashion mishaps on the red carpet over the years, but some are just so bad, we must relive them again. I have a few of my favorite fashion fails from the Academy Awards! At last years Academy Awards, Jennifer stepped out in a Zuhair Murad dress which hugged her curvy figure and was almost breath taking. But the holes in the sleeves took it to that “Jersey Shore” club wear type thing and it just didn’t fly. Other wise, she would have been stunning! Let?s start off with Zooey Deschanel. Her 2005 Oscar dress was a pale 30?s inspired curtain looking thing. In 2006 Naomi Watts’ rocked a beige colored Givenchy gown covered in tulle gown. Back then it was called a “shredded catastrophe” and looking like it “was glued together by a three-year-old”. Yikes. Also in 2006, Charlize [...]

ASUS FonePad official: 7-inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 (hands-on)

ASUS FonePad official 7inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 for 16GB handson

We already knew ASUS was prepping a product called the FonePad, a 7-inch tablet with built-in phone functionality (yes, just like the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0). Well, ASUS just formally unveiled it here at Mobile World Congress, which means we've got a few more details to share than we did previously. First off, the speculation about its specs was all true: this does indeed have an Intel processor -- a 1.2GHz Atom Z2420, to be exact -- along with 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and an HSPA+ radio. What's more, the 4,270mAH battery is said to get up to nine hours of runtime, which would put this in the same league as other Atom tablets we've tested recently.

In terms of hardware features, the FonePad has a smooth metal back (available in gray and gold), making it drastically different in appearance from the similarly sized Nexus 7. 'Round back you'll find a panel where all the usual antennae are, and hidden underneath are both the micro-SIM slot and the microSD reader. That microSD slot, by the way, supports 32GB cards, which should come in handy considering this has just 16GB of built-in storage. Additionally, the tablet has a 1.2-megapixel front camera, attached to a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 IPS display.

The FonePad will be available in Europe for £179 / €219. Here at MWC, ASUS also confirmed a US dollar price of $249, though we had heard rumblings it wouldn't actually be sold there. It arrives in March, but the specific on-sale date hasn't been revealed yet. We're hoping to test one ourselves soon enough, but until then, stay tuned for the usual round of hands-on shots.

Update: Our hands-on photos and video are in! Enjoy!

Let's Talk Oscars

161315061MW00464_85th_Annua We?re one reproductive-technology breakthrough away from not needing men at the Oscars

I promise to spare you a long-form exegesis of Seth MacFarlane?s opening number ?We Saw Your Boobs,? which name-checked various actresses in attendance and enumerated the movies in which they had bared their breasts as the camera cut to the women in question squirming and shielding their faces. These appeared to be staged reactions meant to jokingly dramatize MacFarlane?s inevitable failure as an Oscar host, but the actresses? mortified faces, put-on or not, expressed the audience?s own discomfort with this high-concept kickoff. (The Internet in its wisdom has provided GIFs of the best reactions to the song, including Naomi Watts?, perhaps best described as ?the death of a smile,? and Charlize Theron?s, perhaps best described as ?ice-cold daggers hurled directly from the eyeballs.?)

I?ll limit my discussion of ?We Saw Your Boobs? to noting how, um, nakedly it put into relief a recurring theme in last night?s ceremony: A defensive anxiety about the ascendant power of women (emblematized, later on, by the pairing of the statuesque Theron with the wee Dustin Hoffman as awards presenters.) In spite of MacFarland?s steady stream of lady-diminishing wisecracks (about Jessica Chastain?s character in Zero Dark Thirty being a typical grudge-holding woman, Quvenzhan? Wallis soon being old enough to date George Clooney, etc.) it was a night dominated by a trio of powerful, glittering, seemingly indomitable women: 76-year-old Shirley Bassey in a bronze column dress, belting the Bond theme ?Goldfinger? with old-time showbiz bravura; Adele in sparkly silver, bringing down the house with a magnificently simple (if poorly sound-mixed) rendition of her own 007 song, ?Skyfall,? which went on to win Best Song; and, in the only real gasp-worthy surprise of the night, Michelle Obama in severer, more armor-like silver, appearing live from what appeared to be a West Point dress ball to announce the award for Best Picture.

When the FLOTUS first appeared, didn?t you guys think for a second that the Best Picture award must be going to Lincoln after all? I know I did, and I saw a few other people on my Twitter feed speculating the same. In the end, associating the office of the presidency with that movie would probably have felt just as cheapening, but the presidential subject matter would have at least dignified the crossover attempt with some claim to relevance. Hearing the wan, expected title of Argo on the first lady?s lips made that film?s victory?already the apparent result of a complex set of compromises and industry alliances?seem somehow more paltry and random. For a moment there was a sense of two-worlds-meet vertigo, followed by one of deflation: Why is Michelle Obama lowering herself?and providing ammo to right-wing Hollywood-haters?by solemnly intoning a lot of vague propagandistic cant about art and freedom, then presenting an Oscar to Ben Affleck for a movie that cheerfully repurposes American history as slick, fast-paced entertainment? Shouldn?t Mrs. Obama spend her time in the public eye working to reduce childhood obesity or mom-dancing delightfully with Jimmy Fallon?

I?m afraid to step into the maelstrom of Anne Hathaway feelings that I know each one of us holds inside, but what did you guys make of her Best Actress acceptance speech, with its breathless opening whisper (addressed to the statuette itself): ?It came true?? I don?t want to ally myself with the Hatha-haters?she?s a tremendously gifted performer, even if the close-range caterwauling of Les Mis?rables wasn?t my thing. But wasn?t that widdle-girl whisper (and much of the speech that followed) a very generous self-sprinkling of pixie dust? Who did you think did manage to nail that impossible razor?s edge between fake humility and genuine vainglory?other than Daniel Day-Lewis, who seems to be permanently operating on a plane of humanity that makes the rest of us look like grunting cavemen? Oh, and: Has Jennifer Lawrence ever made a savvier career move than tripping over her pale-pink giant-skirted brocade gown on the way to the podium, then making it back to her feet on her own, waving off the proffered help of both Bradley Cooper and Hugh Jackman? No wonder Seth McFarlane?s worried. We?re one reproductive-technology breakthrough away from not needing men at the Oscars at all.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z preview: a thin and light 10-inch Android Jelly Bean tablet

Sony Xperia Tablet Z handson

Notice the family resemblance? For Sony's latest Android tablet take, its Xperia Tablet Z, the company's extending the austere, omnibalance design (focus on all around symmetry and reflective surfaces) and waterproof certification of the Xperia Z to a 10.1-inch footprint and higher 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. Which means the unique, highly polarizing magazine-like fold of its predecessor, the Xperia Tablet S, has fallen by the wayside and, according to Sony, it's not likely to ever make a comeback. But a cosmetic evolution isn't all that's propping up the Xperia Tablet Z; its lightly-skinned Jelly Bean OS, quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU and 2GB of RAM ensure above average performance for this Sony tab. So how does this Z of another frame fare? Follow on, as we take it for a brief test run.

Following a Healthy Diet to Manage Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes If you?ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or are teetering on the brink, your doctor has no doubt counseled you to follow a healthy diet to maintain safe blood glucose levels. As a patient with adult-onset diabetes, however, chances are pretty good that not understanding the basics of a healthy diet is what got you here in the first place!

The key to healthy eating is to plan meals in advance and to always keep a supply of high fiber multi-grain snacks, fresh fruits and vegetables at the ready to avoid making poor choices when hunger strikes. Eating smaller meals and frequent healthy snacks will help you to maintain steady blood sugar levels throughout the day. Remember to eat before and after periods of exercise or exertion as you burn off more sugar and carbohydrates.

A well-balanced meal should include a lean protein like chicken or fish, a small portion of healthy starch or grain such as brown rice or beans, and a heaping portion of vegetables. Skip the fried foods and replace all fats and oils with olive oil as much as possible. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins and iron, olive oil contains mostly beneficial monounsaturated fat and has been shown to modestly increase HDL cholesterol without adversely affecting LDL cholesterol, and is considered a heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly fat.

Daily Portions of Meat and Fish

A recommended portion of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, and lean meats such as fish and poultry are the best bets. Cold-water fish like herring, salmon are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association recommends limiting meat consumption to no more than six ounces (two decks of cards) per day, i.e. one portion with lunch and one with dinner. Beans are also an excellent source of protein and contain no animal cholesterol unless prepared with some form of meat or lard. Foods to avoid are red meat, bacon, lard, processed foods, which may contain trans-fats and cholesterol, and high-fat dairy products such as whole milk and many types of cheese.

Healthy Fruits and Vegetables

While the term unhealthy fruits and vegetables would seem an oxymoron, there are a few fruits that are high in sugar and should be avoided such as grapes, watermelon, pineapple, apricots and raisins, which may cause unhealthy spikes in blood sugar levels.? Stick to fruits that are lower in sugar and high in antioxidants such as cranberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe and cherries.? All vegetables are good choices, but keep in mind, the richer in color they are the higher the vitamin content they possess.

Starches to Eat and to Avoid

While starches are readily converted to blood glucose, they are nonetheless an important part of a healthy diet because they provide valuable minerals, vitamins and fiber.? However, gluten and grains contribute great to diabetes, so the ideal complex carbohydrates to eat are fresh fruits and vegetables and occasionally brown rice.? Avoid oats and corn.? Also avoid snacks like potato chips, candy bars and other packaged snacks that have no real dietary value anyhow.

Dairy Products and the Diabetes Diet

Dairy products provide an important source of calcium and high-quality protein as well as Vitamin D. The best choices for dairy products are skim or 1% milk, non-fat or light yogurt with no added sugar and fortified, unflavored soymilk for the lactose intolerant. When considering carbs, one cup of milk or yogurt is equal to one small piece of fruit or one slice of bread.

Managing type 2 diabetes doesn?t have to mean completely giving up your favorite foods, merely limiting them to very small, infrequent portions, and learning to embrace healthy, whole grains and foods that are low in fat and high in vitamins and antioxidants. A healthy diabetes diet is a healthy diet for life, and will result in increased energy, improved digestion and a host of added benefits for health and longevity along with healthy blood glucose levels!

Pressure mounts on Facebook to remove rogue tribute pages to Newtown victims

She's hugged President Barack Obama and taken a telephone call from Derek Jeter.

Now if Donna Soto could just connect with Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook.

Not that the heartbroken Stratford mom hasn't tried.

She would tell him about the dozens of unofficial tribute pages on the social networking website dedicated to her eldest daughter, Victoria, who was gunned down while shielding her first-grade students from a killer's bullets at Newtown's Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Many give the appearance that they were created by friends and loved ones of Soto, who was 27 and instantly heralded by the international media as a heroine.

Some have solicited donations in the names of victims, while others have been hijacked by so-called truthers who believe the worst elementary school shooting in U.S. history was a hoax.

"I understand some people have good intentions (and) some people say she is a public figure, but, to me, she is my daughter that was put in this awful position (and) she would never want to be a public figure and she would not want people making pages in her name," Soto said. "I know Vicki better than most, and she would hate this."

Soto, whose daughter was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal at a White House ceremony earlier this month, said her efforts to get Facebook to intervene went nowhere, including a personal message to Zuckerberg.

Facebook spokesman Fred Wolens did not have statistics on how many page-removal requests the 900 million-member-strong website has received related to the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown. He also could not say how many pages have been taken down.

"We will remove any page that is threatening or harassing, or violates our terms," Wolens said.

Wolens included a link to Facebook's user terms and complaints process for reporting objectionable material. He could not comment about specific pages or users.

Hearst Connecticut Newspapers found 103 tribute pages with some combination of Victoria Soto's name and R.I.P., for rest in peace. Requests for comment from the operators of the 15 most popular tribute pages -- those with the most fans or "likes" -- went unanswered. The cover photo on one page showed a pentagram with the words, "Satan Loves Me. R.I.P. Victoria Soto."

"That page is the worst," said Ryan Graney, who volunteered to help Soto's mother report offensive pages to Facebook and, in some cases, the FBI.

Graney has also been helping Kaitlin Roig, who is credited with saving the lives of 15 of her first-grade students by hiding them in a bathroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Roig, 29, who is from Greenwich, was a guest of Jill Biden at this month's State of the Union address. Roig has a pair of tribute pages dedicated to her, calling her a hero.

Roig spurned comparisons between herself and her six fallen colleagues, saying she doesn't think of herself as a hero.

"I did what needed to be done in a situation that nobody should ever be put in," Roig said.

A conspiracy theorist commenting on one of those pages posted a photo of a "crisis actress," to whom he claims Roig bears a striking resemblance.

"Having been a part of something extremely traumatic and horrific and reading people's just senseless comments about something they know nothing about is just disturbing and hurtful," Roig said.

She said that well-meaning tribute pages have gotten out of hand because their creators have failed to keep tabs on offensive comments. Roig even made a direct appeal to one, but to not avail.

"To whomever started this page ... thank you," Roig posted from her personal Facebook account. "The positive messages are AMAZING. Unfortunately coming on for the first time, I can't believe that anyone human would post such unkind words. Please, please cancel this page."

Graney, 31, a self-described Web nerd and Nashville transplant from upstate New York, met with Roig over coffee. She has never met Donna Soto, but sent her a message offering to help.

"She has been an invaluable resource for me and my family," Soto said. "Any time I have a site that I feel is a problem, I pass it on to her."

It has been an uphill battle for Graney, however.

"Facebook can't really do anything about it because it's considered free speech," she said.

Graney has publicly and privately pleaded with the operators of tribute sites to voluntarily remove them. She said she's even resorted to calling some of them after tracking down their contact information.

"This one woman responded and said, `No, I'm not taking it down,' " Graney said.

The page in question, dedicated to Victoria Soto, has more than 8,000 "likes," Graney said the creator told her.

"I was like, `Yeah, those likes are not for you. They're for someone who is gone,'" Graney said. "These people are trying to get Internet famous."

Graney said she reported a tribute page for Soto to the FBI because it was soliciting donations.

"They wouldn't tell me where the money was going," Graney said.

FBI Special Agent Dan Curtin, who is based in New Haven, said agency policy is not to disclose the number or nature of ongoing investigations to protect their integrity.

"We're aware of what's out there," Curtin said.

In December, a Bronx, N.Y., woman was arrested by federal law enforcement agents for using a Facebook account to raise money for a funeral fund for Noah Pozner, a 6-year-old victim of the massacre that she claimed was a relative.

"There's a lot of concern amongst the families in Newtown about some very disturbing traffic online, whether it's people trying to profit off the tragedy or people on the fringes of society who are trying to deny its existence in the first place," said U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.

Murphy characterized claims that the mass shooting was staged as "unconscionable lies.

"I think there's a tension between trying to call out these lies for what they are and giving them more attention than they deserve," said Murphy, a former member of the House whose district included Newtown.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said that Facebook has been responsive when he has raised concerns about illicit material such as pornography in the past as the state's longtime attorney general.

"We have received some complaints and concerns," Blumenthal said. "Certainly, some of the websites are troubling. My hope is the privacy and grieving of the families will be respected."

Donna Soto created an official tribute page for her slain daughter, which had nearly 40,000 "likes" as of Friday. The address is http://www.facebook.com/VictoriaLeighSoto26

She posts photos of Victoria and her siblings on there, as well as images of flamingos that caught her daughter's fancy.

"Having this page for Vicki is a diversion for me," Soto said. "I love to read the comments from people all over the country and world telling me how my daughter has changed the way people think, or that people have changed their career path because of her."

Not all of Soto's encounters are a source of comfort, however.

"I get a lot of horrible postings saying that Sandy Hook was a hoax," Soto said. "If I don't get on the page quickly, people respond and comment and it goes back and forth. I try not to ever respond to these people. They don't deserve my time and I think it makes it worse. I have banned many, many people. One negative comment, and I ban them from the page."

Even Soto's status updates on Facebook have become fodder, much to her distress.

"I also put a status on Facebook asking if anyone had any ties to One Direction -- it is a boy band that a little girl I know likes and I thought if someone could get her an autographed picture that would be great," Soto said. "I was attacked for wanting to meet celebrities. I could care less about celebrities. At this point, nothing matters in my life right now, except my family. My daughter was killed protecting her 6-year-old kids in a good school in a good town doing what she loved to do. No celebrity or amount of money will ever be important to me. I don't care about it. My daughter, my pride and joy, the best daughter a mom could ask for, is gone."

Roig, who attended Victoria Soto's wake, commiserated with her mother.

"It's a shame that you would have to endure any more pain after going through that," Roig said.

(AP) ? In the animated feature film category at this year's Oscars, there's a film set in medieval Scotland, another that features old-school video game characters, one that relies heavily on dry British humor, while the other two take inspiration from the supernatural.

It's not exactly kid stuff ? and that's how the directors like it.

"I think this year with these films ? and so many more ? the envelope for animation is being pushed," said "Brave" director Mark Andrews at an Academy Awards event Thursday night honoring the animated feature film nominees. "We keep seeing more risky, deep films that we wouldn't have seen 10 years ago coming out. I wanna be one of those guys pushing it more and more and more because it's not only an awesome medium, but there's so many more stories that we can tell."

The Scotland-set "Brave," a darker fable from Pixar about a rebellious red-headed princess named Merida, will face off against four other animated films at Sunday's 85th annual Academy Awards. The category was first introduced at the 2002 ceremony, with "Shrek" winning the inaugural trophy.

Despite the less lighthearted tone of this year's animated nominees, none cracked the best picture category for a spot alongside the likes of "Argo," ''Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty." (Only three animated films have ever been nominated for best picture at the Oscars: "Beauty and the Beast," ''Up" and "Toy Story 3.")

"Edward Scissorhands" and "The Nightmare Before Christmas" mastermind Tim Burton could take home his first-ever Oscar at the Dolby Theatre ceremony for "Frankenweenie," his black-and-white stop-motion film based on his 1984 live-action short film of the same name.

"Frankenweenie" is among three of the five Oscar nominated films this year that employ stop-motion, the intricate and time consuming animation method that use miniature sculptures and sets. Despite a strong stop-motion presence at this year's Oscars, Burton cited finances, not the omnipresence of computer animation, as the reason that more stop-motion films aren't produced.

"In the case of 'Frankenweenie,' it's not like it was a studio wish-list to-do: 'Let's make black-and-white stop-motion animation,'" said Burton. "You hope it can survive. We all love it."

The other stop-motion nominees are the English seafaring comedy "Pirates! Band of Misfits" from director Peter Lord and the undead tale "ParaNorman" from directors Sam Fell and Chris Butler.

"Wreck-It Ralph" director Rich Moore told the crowd at the motion picture academy's Beverly Hills headquarters that he never envisioned the video game adventure from Disney as a musical, but "Book of Mormon" co-writer Robert Lopez and his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez did create an original song for the film.

"It didn't work, so it's not in the movie," said Moore. "That's our process. We try lots of stuff. We throw it against the wall, and the stuff that sticks stays in the movie. It's a very organic process making films like this."

News Summary: Targeted cancer drug approved

(Reuters) - People may think that in the director category, Ben Affleck got robbed by the Academy this year, but consider this: Alfred Hitchcock never won a competitive Oscar. Actor Peter O'Toole was nominated eight times but never took home the award. If that doesn't prove the Academy doesn't vote with posterity in mind, I don't know what could. Members play the cards they are dealt, year by year, which leads to some questionable decisions when hindsight enters the picture. "Citizen Kane" may be widely regarded as the greatest film of all time, but that's not what the Academy thought in 1941. ...

Podcast Basics For Tucson MLM Business Bloggers | Healthy ...

Podcast Basics For Tucson MLM Business Bloggers

Today?s Tucson direct selling article is for Tucson internet rookies who want to kick up their web marketing a notch by adding a podcast to their Tucson home business blog.

A podcast is a multimedia file that is downloaded for playback on a mobile device such as an iPod or laptop computer. It can be a digital recording of a radio program or, more often, a program produced solely for online distribution. A podcast can be a recording of a webcast: a live Tucson program that is ?streamed? or broadcast on the internet in real time. When this is the case, it is similar to a DVD recording of a live program that you store in the database of your playback device.

A related term is the acronym RSS which probably originally stood for Rich Site Summary feed but is sometimes used for Really Simple Syndication. You have probably seen the term RSS on websites. An RSS feed allows digital files to be downloaded in a standard format. Phoenix podcast listeners often subscribe to favorite ongoing podcasts. When new podcasts are produced, they are automatically downloaded by RSS applications.

It is fairly simple hardware- and software-wise to product your own podcast for your Tucson online business
. Your laptop may already have recording capability. If not, you can buy any equipment you need in the Phoenix area.

Tucson business owners operating on a shoestring will be happy to know that basic recording and editing software can be downloaded for free. If you want to get fancy, you can always buy more sophisticated software at Arizona specialty computer stores. I recommend using a headset microphone so the mic is always in the right spot to get a clear and consistent recording.

Now the fun part: what will you podcast? The possibilities are endless for Tucson direct marketers. You can record Arizona trade show presentations, interviews with founding distributors of your Tucson direct sales company, or create an entertaining pitch about your Phoenix business opportunity. Let your expertise and enthusiasm shine.
