A 20-ounce squeeze bottle of Heinz Ketchup was $2.69, but the list price was shown as $47.49. A box of Barilla thin spaghetti was $1.85. The supposed list price was $55.10.
?It?s just crazy,? Dworsky says. ?These list prices were literally plucked from thin air and then multiplied by a hundred.?
These are not isolated examples. Dworsky says he found hundreds of products that had ?grossly exaggerated regular prices.? (Dworsky lists some of these ?questionable discounts? in the Mouse Print section of his website, ConsumerWorld.org.)
I went on Amazon this weekend and had no trouble finding the same ?crazy? list prices.? I then went price shopping at my local supermarket to get the ballpark idea of the real selling price.

I don?t know what?s going on here, but it?s not right. In many cases, the grocery items listed on the site are not sold directly by Amazon.?So it might be that Amazon is not policing the prices that other companies post on its site. If that?s the case, then Amazon needs to do a better job of monitoring this.
Whatever the reason, consumer protection laws say ?suggested retail? or ?list prices? must be realistic and not some made-up figure. Otherwise, the savings are unsubstantiated and the advertising is considered to be deceptive.
If this is happening on Amazon.com with groceries, it makes me wonder about the ?list prices? on other items being sold on the site.
My advice: Forget about savings claims from supposed ?list prices.? Always compare the price of an item at one store (or website) with the actual selling price of other retailers.?

For one, the assessed values of the properties, which are the basis for calculating the taxes, keep on arbitrarily changing and the taxes are rising. Despite the depressed economy, City Hall projects property tax revenues to go up from about $18 million this fiscal year to more than $20 billion by the year 2016. This despite the Bloomberg administration?s claim that it has not imposed any new taxes on the paying public.

According to a spokesman for the Department of Finance, the values of these homes are capped so as to avoid large annual increases when market is on the upswing. DALLAS (AP) ? Billy Wright plunked down dime after dime for comic books while growing up in the late 1930s and early 1940s, caring for the collection he started around the age of 9 until his death more than half a century later. On Wednesday, most of that collection sold for a whopping $3.5 million.
Wright's 345 comics, nearly all of which were published from 1936 through 1941, included many of the most prized issues ever, including Detective Comics No. 27, which features the debut of Batman, and Action Comics No. 1, in which Superman's first appears.
Experts say Wright's collection, which included 44 of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide's top 100 issues from comics' golden age, was remarkable for its number of rare issues, but also because it was compiled by a single person in childhood who kept it in good condition until his death in 1994 at age 66.
"This really has its place in the history of great comic book collections," said Lon Allen, the managing director of comics for Dallas-based Heritage Auctions, which oversaw the auction in New York City.
The copy of Detective Comics No. 27, from 1939, drew the highest bid Wednesday, selling for $523,000, including a buyer's premium, Allen said. Wright's Action Comics No. 1, from 1938, sold for about $299,000; Batman No. 1, from 1940, sold for about $275,000; and Captain America No. 2, a 1941 issue with Adolf Hitler on the cover, sold for about $114,000.
"It was amazing seeing what they went for," said Michael Rorrer, who discovered his late great uncle's neatly stacked comics in a basement closet while cleaning out his great aunt's Martinsville, Va., home after she died last year.
Most comics from the golden age ? the late 1930s into the 1950s ? fell victim to wartime paper drives, normal wear and tear and mothers throwing them out, said J.C. Vaughn, associate publisher of Overstreet. Of the 200,000 copies of Action Comics No. 1 produced, about 130,000 were sold and the about 70,000 that didn't sell were pulped. Today, experts believe only about 100 copies are left in the world, he said.
"The scope of this collection is, from a historian's perspective, dizzying," Vaughn said.
There were 227 of the collection's comic books sold on Wednesday for $3,466,264. The remaining comics, which are of lesser value, will be sold in online auctions Friday and Sunday and are expected to fetch about $100,000.
Rorrer, 31, said he didn't realize how valuable the comics were until months after returning home to Oxnard, Calif., when he mentioned them to a co-worker who mused that it would be quite something if he had Action Comics No. 1.
"I went home and was looking through some of them, and there it was," said Rorrer, who then began researching the collection's value in earnest.
He reached out to his mother, Lisa Hernandez, who still had half the comics at her home in League City, Texas, that she intended to give to his brother in Houston. They then went through their boxes, checking comic after comic off the list.
Hernandez said it really hit her how valuable the comics were when she saw the look on Allen's face when the auction house expert came to her house to look through the comics.
"It was kind of hard to wrap my head around it," Allen said.
The find was a complete surprise for the family, and it is unclear if Ruby Wright was aware of the collection's significance. Rorrer said he remembers her making only one fleeting reference to comics: Upon learning he and his brother liked comic books, she said she had some she would one day give them. He said his great uncle never mentioned his collection.
Allen, who called the collection "jaw-dropping," noted that Wright "seemed to have a knack" for picking up the ones that would be the most valuable.
"There were some really hard to find books that were in really, really great condition," said Paul Litch, the primary grader at Certified Guaranty Company, an independent certification service for comic books.
"You can see it was a real collection," Litch said. "Someone really cared about these and kept them in good shape."
Hernandez said it makes sense that her uncle ? even as a boy ? had a discerning eye. The man who went to The College of William and Mary before having a long career as a chemical engineer for DuPont was smart, she said. And, she added, Wright was an only child whose mother kept most everything he had. She said that they found games from the 1930s that were still in their original boxes.

Honoring Patients? Treatment Choices at the End of Life: New Tools, New Challenges, New Limits
Hamline University School of Law, Saint Paul, MN, November 8-9, 2012
The Health Law Institute at Hamline University and the Hamline Law Review seek proposals for presentations and papers for our all-day fall CLE/CEU Symposium on Friday, November 9, 2012. Our Symposium will examine the problems and solutions to issues currently arising at the intersection of medical law and end-of-life care.
TOPICS: Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Legal and medical issues concerning the use of POLST orders, especially in Minnesota;
- Institutional and community responses to medical futility disputes;
- Legal issues involved in end-of-life planning, including advance directives, health care proxies, DNR orders, living wills and the initiation and cessation of artificial support systems (such as artificial nutrition and hydration);
- A view of the decision-making process in end-of-life cases from the perspective of the parent, the family and the medical provider;

Potential symposium speakers include both scholars and practitioners in law, medicine, and other disciplines. MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) ? The revelation that guards likely helped members of the violent Zetas drug cartel slaughter 44 rival inmates and break out of a northern Mexico jail throws new attention on the enormous corruption inside the country's overcrowded, underfunded prisons.
The top officials and as many as 18 guards at the Apodaca prison may have helped 30 Zetas escape during the confusion of a riot early Sunday in which other Zetas fatally bludgeoned and knifed 44 members of the rival Gulf cartel, Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina said Monday.
The massacre in this northern state was one of the worst prison killings in Mexico in at least a quarter-century and exposed another weak institution that President Felipe Calderon is relying on to fight his drug war.
Mexico has only six federal prisons, and so sends many of its dangerous cartel suspects and inmates to ill-prepared, overcrowded state penitentiaries. Drug trafficking, weapons possession and money laundering are all considered federal crimes in Mexico.
"The Mexican prison system has collapsed," said Raul Benitez, a professor at Mexico's National Autonomous University who studies security issues. "The prisons in some states are controlled by organized crime."
An increase in organized crime, extortion, drug trafficking and kidnapping has swelled Mexico's prison population almost 50 percent since 2000. But the government has built no new federal prisons since Calderon launched an offensive against drug cartels when he took office in late 2006, leaving existing jails overcrowded.
Calderon's administration has agreed to renovate two existing state prisons to use as federal lockups.
Built to hold about 185,000 inmates, the prison system nationwide now holds more than 40,000 above that capacity, according to figures from the National Public Safety System.
Prison employees say guards are underpaid, making them more likely to take bribes. And even honest guards are vulnerable to coercion: Many live in neighborhoods where street gangs and drug cartels are active, making it easy to target their families with threats.
The same can be said for Mexico's municipal police forces, another weak flank in Calderon's attack on organized crime. Thousands of local officers ? often, entire forces at a time ? have been fired, detained or placed under investigation for aiding drug gangs.
"Yesterday, Apodaca, tomorrow, any other (prison)," columnist Carlos Puig wrote in the newspaper Milenio.
Nuevo Leon's governor said Sunday's breakout appeared to have been premeditated and it would have been hard or impossible to stage without the help of prison authorities.
Medina said guards and officials in the prison in Apodaca, outside the northern city of Monterrey, may have simply allowed Zetas inmates to walk out. No holes were found in the prison's perimeter walls, and no armed gang burst in to spring them.
"Unfortunately, a group of traitors has set back the work of a lot of good police," Medina said at a news conference. He offered a reward of 10 million pesos (almost $800,000) for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the mass escape.
An increase in prison violence and escapes is fueled in part by the increasing presence of members of highly organized drug cartels and other gangs in the prisons. In January, a fight between inmates in the Gulf Coast city of Altamira left 31 dead. A total of 171 inmates died in such violence last year, up from 45 in 2007, according to the newspaper Milenio.
Often, the riots and escapes are aided by authorities.
In the most striking case, prison corruption resulted in a massacre outside prison walls in 2010. Guards and officials at a prison in Gomez Palacio in northern Durango state let cartel inmates out, lent them guns and sent them off in official vehicles to carry out drug-related killings, including a massacre of 17 people at a rented dance hall. After carrying out the killings, the inmates returned to their cells, where they were safe from their rivals.
More typical was a prison massacre last July in the border city of Juarez that killed 17 inmates. Surveillance video showed guards standing passively by as two inmates took their keys and opened cell doors to spray bullets into a room where members of a rival gang were reportedly holding an unauthorized party, complete with women and booze.
The Zetas, with their quasi-military discipline, probably have an edge on their rivals from the Gulf cartel, said Benitez, the professor who studies security.
"Once inside, they gain control rapidly," he said.
The Zetas and Gulf cartel split in 2010 and have been fighting bloody turf battles in Monterrey and throughout much of northeastern Mexico since then.
But Benitez said Mexico's prisons are part of two larger problems: rampant corruption and a dysfunctional justice system.
"The prison system is just one part of the larger penal-justice system, and in Mexico the penal reform movement is going very badly," he said.
Authorities agreed there are huge problems.
"The shortcomings that exist in Mexican prisons, insufficient food, inadequate space to sleep, (poor) clothing for inmates, bad medical service, have made the prisons into places where corruption and inequality among inmates proliferates," according to a 2008 report on the nation's prisons, the federal Public Safety Department said
The report recommended legal changes to let more prisoners await trial while on bail, and the construction of more and better jails. Three years and hundreds of inmates deaths later, none of those changes have been carried out.
