I am deeply touched by your kind and caring words.? I believe we heal as we help others.? We fill a void in our lives when we seek to fill a void in others? hearts.

I am motivated to share my thoughts and feelings about bullying and hatred.? It seems to be in the news a lot lately.? I have always been a defender of those who are bullied, a protector of those who are victimized, a supporter of those who are oppressed, an encourager of those who are demoralized, a source of empowerment for those who are weak.? Sadly, there will always be hateful and selfish people in life.? Unfortunately, a world without sadness and evil may never exist.? Despite this depressing truth, we can make a difference.? Let?s reject evil and embrace love.? Each of us can be instruments of goodwill, making a positive impact and influence in this world, and it starts with those closest to us.

Lest I sound idealistic and Pollyannaish, I believe we need more love in the world.? If each of us has more love in our heart, mind and soul, life would be so much more fulfilling, meaningful and beautiful.? A lifestyle of loving our fellow human beings can enhance our relationships, health and quality of life.? Love does not mean ignoring evil, allowing abuse, rejecting healthy boundaries or letting someone do whatever he or she wants ?that might be a topic for a future blog.

It bothers, angers and saddens me when I see someone treated disrespectfully and hatefully.? None of us deserves to be treated like dirt or garbage.? We are all precious, important, and worthy of dignity.? If we have differing opinions with someone, we can agree to disagree agreeably.? Not seeing eye to eye with someone on whatever issue is not an excuse, reason or justification to hurt or hate someone.? Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ?Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.? Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.?? Let?s love sparingly, deeply and sincerely, because when we do this, we start to truly live!

Bullying, racism, sexism, and other forms of hatred reflect fears, insecurities, hurts and/or lack of knowledge.? Perhaps, we were injured by someone, so we believe the stereotypes about him or her.? Perhaps, we lack confidence or have a bad self-image, so we demean or diminish someone?s worth to feel a false sense of security.? Perhaps, we want to protect ourselves and our loved ones from dangers, but we demonize and vilify an entire group of people.? Perhaps, we do not want to deal with the root problems of an issue, so we blame someone else and use him or her as a scapegoat.? Perhaps, we do not know much about someone and we de-humanize him or her.

To heal from the ways we tend to embrace, embody and emit hatred, I encourage all of us to do some self-introspection.? I pray we purge ourselves from those fears, insecurities, hurts and ignorance, so we are free to love.? Let?s fill our hearts, minds and souls with genuine love for others.? Let?s treat others the ways we want to be treated.? Black, white, brown, red, yellow or any permutations of these skin colors; poor or rich or anywhere in between; young or old or anywhere in between; educated or unschooled or anywhere in between, gay or straight or anywhere in between, fit or obese or anywhere in between, beautiful or homely or anywhere in between (by societal standards), powerful or unassuming or anywhere in between?let?s respect each other, let?s love each other!? Let?s enjoy our diversity and respect our differences.? Remember, we can agree to disagree, but let?s do that agreeably.

For those of you who have been bullied, slighted, discriminated, injured or violated by someone who was controlled by hate, I am sorry.? My heart, prayers and LOVE go out to you!? You are not alone!? Together, we can heal, be restored and become tools for compassion.? No matter how wealthy we are, no matter how attractive we are, no matter how erudite we are, no matter how influential we are, no matter how talented we are, no matter how strong we are, no matter famous we are, no matter how generous and philanthropic we are?it is all rubbish if love and humility does not reign supremely in our hearts.? Is There Any Meaning to Staging Designations? | | home staging in ...

Recently I posted a link on facebook to an article on the Real Estate Staging Association (RESA) website entitled ?Designations, Certifications and Accreditation. What does it all mean for the home staging and redesign industry?? One of my fellow stagers, Jennifer Putman-Macleod, of Belleville, ON asked:

?What does this mean for us in Canada? Or with the CSP label!?

Such an excellent question, deserves a thoughtful answer.

The above mentioned RESA article compares the evolution of the staging industry to that of the real estate industry. The writer gives the formation of the National Association of Realtors? in the US as an equivalent to the formation of RESA.

In Canada, real estate organizational development has a similar history. The Canadian Association of Realtors? evolved out of localized real estate boards formed from 1888 onwards. In 1943, eleven boards joined to become the Canadian Association of Real Estate Boards (CAREB), a national body concerned with industry advocacy in the post-war era.

The Canadian Institute of REALTORS? was established in 1955 to encourage provinces to create real estate courses and designations. Correspondence courses for the designation ?Fellow of the REALTORS? Institute? or FRI were organized through the University of Toronto.

Eventually CAREB evolved into today?s Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), located in Ottawa, who undertake increasingly important government lobbying activities. Read more details of their history at http://www.crea.ca/public/crea/history.htm.

The author of the RESA article says that, similar to members of the national real estate bodies, its members:

?. . . are people with common interests coming together to advance professionalism, excellence and legitimacy in the home staging and redesign industry.?

RESA allows all staging practitioners to become members and encourages them to demonstrate their commitment to ethical standards and continuing education by qualifying for programs such as RESA-PRO, True Portfolio and Staging Excellence Alliance. Members are also able to take advantage of an array of services provided by vendor partners. Annual staging competitions and an International Conference serve to educate, ?and inspire the industry as well as elevating its public profile.

One of the most important functions of RESA is to be an impartial third party in evaluating training courses for home staging.?Certified Staging Professional (CSP) is one of the training courses accredited by RESA. As an independent third party, RESA reviews these training programs to make sure trainees are actually getting what they need to know. Training companies like CSP pay an admin fee to have their curriculum reviewed but they can?t buy accreditation.

People who want to take a staging course can look to RESA to find courses which they have accredited. Furthermore, accredited trainers have agreed to comply with a grievance process where a student can file a grievance with RESA and have it independently investigated and resolved. In the role of course accreditation, RESA is to staging what the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) is to Interior Design education.

For the public, RESA provides quality assurance when they are hiring a stager with RESA approved education. As RESA becomes more well recognized as an industry self-regulating body, this role will increase. Current consumers have to determine for themselves exactly what makes good staging and how to ensure they get it. RESA provides useful information for consumers in this regard. As the RESA article explains, lack of accreditation may not mean a stager?s designation is of no value. However, referring to the RESA website is a quick and easy way for a home seller to quickly find a good home stager.

In my opinion, growing the recognition of RESA as the primary independent trade association for home staging can only help the home staging industry build and preserve its reputation.

Middle school boys rated reading more valuable as an activity after two months of using an e-reader, according to a new study.

The findings come from a study of 199 middle school students who struggle with reading and who participated in a reading improvement class that included Amazon's Kindle e-reader, said one of the study's authors, Dara Williams-Rossi, Southern Methodist University, Dallas.

The researchers found that boys consistently had a higher self-concept of their reading skill than girls both before and after using the e-readers. After use of the e-readers, boys' attitudes about the value of reading improved, while girls' attitudes declined, said Williams-Rossi, an assistant clinical professor in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development at SMU.

Technology motivated boys; girls appear to prefer actual books

"The technology appeared to motivate the boys to read, while many girls preferred the actual books," said Williams-Rossi, who is also director of undergraduate programs in Simmons. "The data showing the girls' preference were statistically significant and particularly intriguing. This is part of a 3-year study and this data came midway through, so we are continuing our investigation and interviewing girls to understand their reaction to the e-readers. It may be that they prefer curling up with actual books and that they enjoy sharing their reading with their friends."

Among the findings, students generally liked using e-readers and many felt that using it helped their reading improve. Sixth- and seventh-graders were more enthusiastic than eighth-graders about the e-readers, the researchers found.

Based on anecdotal comments from the children, the researchers found the e-readers sparked excitement among the students, resulting in positive attention for the students in the reading improvement classes. Over the course of the study, word about the e-readers spread around the school, and students who weren't in reading improvement classes began asking how they could join "the Kindle classes."

Access to Internet a challenge; boosts need for teacher monitoring

For the study, the researchers provided e-books on the Kindle e-readers to 199 students at an urban middle school in Texas. The students had about 15 to 25 minutes during their silent reading improvement class period to read high-interest chapter books and stories on the Kindle. Books included 25 classics, including The Wizard of Oz and Black Beauty, as well as ghost stories and scary stories, which were the most popular. Students said they read between one and four e-books over the course of the two-month study.

Teachers generally thought the e-readers were better at getting their reluctant readers engaged, but they reported being frustrated by students' easy Internet access through the district's Wi-Fi, which required them to monitor the students more closely. Also, the teachers had to spend time keeping the e-readers charged, checked-out and locked up each night, but teachers told the researchers they plan to incorporate e-readers into their classes in coming years.

Overall, the students and their two teachers rated the experience as highly satisfying. In asking individual students what they liked about the e-readers, they said they liked not having to carry a lot of books; they liked other students not knowing their reading level or choice of book; and they liked that the book they were reading was always available and hadn't been removed from the classroom. The voice-to-text feature was popular with students for whom English is a second language.

In describing their reactions to the e-readers, students advised improvements to the Kindle and the books: a light, so it can be read in the dark; pictures; more books; and graphic novels.

Middle schoolers read less than younger students; "boring way to spend time"

Study findings were published in the International Journal of Applied Science and Technology as "Reluctant Readers in Middle School: Successful Engagement with Text Using the E-Reader," authored by Williams-Rossi with three other researchers, all from Fort Worth, Texas: Twyla Miranda, Texas Wesleyan University; Kary A. Johnson, The Reading Connection; and Nancy McKenzie, Tarrant Community College. A link to the study is at http://tinyurl.com/d3b6avw.

"It's inevitable that e-reader technology will enter school classrooms," said the authors. "Our study presents reasons e-readers may be beneficial, in particular, to reluctant readers in middle grades."

Previous research in the field has shown that upper elementary and middle school students tend to read less than younger students because of time spent with their friends and in other activities. Also, these same students, particularly boys, may not value reading as much as they did when they were younger. One study found that most students indicated reading is a "boring way to spend time."

Among those students, research has shown that low-skilled readers have trouble starting, continuing and finishing a book, and that they are stymied by vocabulary and reading comprehension challenges. Skilled readers, on the other hand, enjoy books.

Researchers have suggested that technological gadgets, enlarged text and a more favorable environment might encourage reluctant readers. For those reasons the authors pursued a study to see how reluctant readers would respond to e-readers. Rotary International Club purchased the e-readers for the research.

Kids Camp Offers a Fun and Safe Summer Alternative - ABC of Fitness

LifeCenter Plus Health and Fitness Club is offering a variety of summer fun programs for kids ages 3 to 15 starting June 4 and continuing through August 22. Parents can select from full-day and half-day summer camp options as well as before and after camp care at the Hudson-based premier health and fitness facility.

The 12 weeks of Kids Camps offer sports oriented programs, action camps and summer themed weeks of fun each designed to appeal to different age groups. The travel camps take students to a different location each day. With more than 35 different weekly camp programs to choose from, Kids Camps at LifeCenter Plus provides children with a memorable summer and parents with peace of mind and a supervised alternative.

Some of the camp themes available include Golf, Arts & Science and Outdoor Adventures for students aged seven to twelve and Zoo Camp, Backyard Fun and Super Hero camp for the younger set.

Dancing With the Stars Week 2: Who Was the Best?

It's game on now.

One week ago, we got to know this season's dozen dancing aspirants. With no threat of elimination, they all got their feet wet, with some performing better than others.

Tonight, it was officially go time.

Who was able to build on their performances from last Monday's Dancing With the Stars premiere? Who took a step back? Who's likely to be in danger Tuesday night?

Coming into the second night of performances, only six points separated the leaders (Jaleel White and Katherine Jenkins) from the bottom of the barrel.

Finding Home Care for Elderly Family Members

A live-in aide could be a good option for your family. Around the clock care from an aide isn?t cheap, but it may be the best option for your family in certain situations, especially if you need live-in care for just a short period of time.

Whether you need long-term or short-term care for your ailing parents, though, here are six things you need to consider before you hire a live-in aide.

What type of aide do you need?

According to an MSN.com article on the subject, there are several types of live-in aides that are available today. It?s essential that you choose the right type of aide, as choosing one that is overqualified for the job could leave your pocketbook unnecessarily slim, while choosing one that?s underqualified for the job could leave your parents in danger. Here?s a bit about the three basic types of aides:

• Certified nursing assistants: These assistants work for registered nurses, or did at one time. They?re qualified to help with more intense activities like bathing, and they can monitor medications, do basic checks of your parents? vitals, and care for wounds.
• Home health aides: These individuals have slightly less qualifications than certified nursing assistants, but they?re able to take care of basic things like bathing and ensuring that your parents eat a healthy diet.
• Personal care attendants: These individuals are also known as personal companions. They don?t take care of things like bathing or wound care as often, but they will help with household chores, including cleaning, cooking, and shopping.

While these are three separate categories of live-in aides, their responsibilities, in reality, often overlap. It?s not uncommon for a certified nursing assistant to take care of not only health care issues but also shopping or cleaning while acting as a live-in aide. However, the aides with more certifications are more expensive, so you will want to tailor the type of aide you choose to your parents? actual needs.

?How much can you afford?

While the decision to hire a live-in aide is more about the well-being of the people who cared for you your entire life than about money, budget is definitely an issue when it comes to hiring an aide for your parents. The cost of a live-in aide will vary dramatically from one area of the country to the next. Just to give you an idea of potential costs, though, a New York Times article notes that round the clock care through Partners in Care, a New York based company, can cost from $1,000 to over $3,000 per week.
Your budget can help you determine what type of care you?re looking for, as well as how much care you can afford to pay for. If you really need someone to be awake the entire time they?re with your parents, you?ll probably pay for four separate aides who will alternate twelve-hour shifts. If you only need daytime care and can give the aide the nights off for personal time and sleep (even if they spend the night in your parents? home), you can probably work with two different aides.
One thing to keep in mind with your budget is overtime. You?ll need to pay more for hours worked over forty hours a week, which is why Partners in Care suggests hiring multiple aides if you need around the clock care throughout the week.

How do you want to hire the aide?

There are two different ways to hire a live-in aide: individually or through an agency. Here?s a bit about what each experience could be like for you:

• Hiring independently: Hiring an aide independently can save you some money, since their hourly rates tend to be lower, as you aren?t paying the middle-man, as well. However, independent aides tend to have a high turnover rate, so you may not be able to give your parents long-term stability. Also, you?ll have to take care of supervision as well as payroll taxes and other government paperwork on your own.
• Hiring through an agency: On the surface, hiring through an agency is more expensive. However, the agency takes care of payroll taxes and supervision. Often times, CNAs are supervised by certified nurses who can give them advice on your parents? healthcare, which is reassuring. Also, with an agency, you can usually try out several home aides before you decide which one to use, and agencies will often provide backup care if your regular aide is ill or takes a vacation.

Whether you hire independently or through an agency, make sure that you have a reference check, a background check for a criminal record, and a check for tuberculosis and other communicable diseases to ensure your parents will be as safe as possible.

Is the aide licensed, bonded, and insured?

Whether you hire individually or through an agency, you should make sure that your home health aide is licensed, bonded, and insured. Most aides who have worked for an agency at any point with at least have an old license, even if it?s out of date. If you?re hiring a freelancing aide, the up to date license may not be as important as long as the aide still has current knowledge on things like CPR and first aid.
Bonded and insured live-in aides are essential. Bonding and insurance basically let you know that if something happens in your parents? home or if you find that something has been stolen, someone will reimburse your family.

Does the agency and/or the aide have a good reputation?

While you hear lots of horror stories on the news of live-in aides committing elder abuse or stealing cash, credit cards or jewelry from their clients, the truth is that there are just a few bad apples out there who ruin the reputation of the whole bunch. For the most part, people become live-in aides because they enjoy working with the elderly or disabled and because they really do care about their clients.
The best way to avoid a bad apple, besides running background checks and checking references, of course, is to ask for referrals and see who has a great reputation. Talk to local nursing homes, friends and relatives who have elderly parents, or even older people who have their own live-in or part time aides. You?ll be able to quickly see who has a great reputation and who you should steer clear of.

What are your expectations for a live-in aide?

One last thing to think about before hiring a live-in aide is what your expectations for the aide are. It?s helpful if your parents can form a bond with the aide over common interests, but at the very least, the aide should be polite, interested, and companionable. Talk about how many hours you expect an aide to work, whether the aide can sleep when your parents are asleep, and what types of daily tasks the aide will carry out. Talk with your parents about expectations, as well, since they may have some ideas of their own about what they would like in a live-in aide. While your aide may not be perfect, finding one who can meet a minimum standard of expectations is certainly not impossible.

Paying the Live-in Aide

Of course, paying your live-in aide can be the most complicated part. ?The last thing you want to do is to get into deep credit card debt. ?It?s usually wise to get a sense of where all your money goes.
There may be some government assistance available through Medicare or even the Housing Choice Voucher Program that will help pay for a live-in aide, although you?ll need to research these options for your family. However you decide to pay for a live-in aide, make sure you work through the hiring process carefully, thinking through each of these issues before you finally hire a live-in aide for your parents.
