Former Thai sex tycoon vies to become lawmaker (AP)

BANGKOK ? As the super-pimp who once ran Thailand's biggest brothel empire and then exposed the police kickbacks he had to pay for it to flourish, Chuvit Kamolvisit feels uniquely qualified to lead the country's fight against corruption.

And in his quest to win a parliament seat in elections Sunday, the 49-year-old one-time massage parlor king is betting a public tired of divisive, hypocritical leaders will agree.

Politicians "are like diapers ? you have to change them," Chuvit told The Associated Press in an interview, referring to a campaign poster that features him cradling a toddler. "Otherwise it's too dirty."

Chuvit's bid to become a lawmaker is no joke. He first won a national assembly seat back in 2005, only to be disqualified the following year because he had not been a member of his party long enough before the poll.

He's also run for Bangkok governor twice, coming in a distant third both times. His last campaign nose-dived after he punched a newscaster in the face for asking questions he didn't like ? then kicked him when he fell to the ground.

"When I got into politics, I didn't know that it's too dirty for me ? even me," Chuvit said ruefully.

"Maybe I'm stupid for jumping into it," he added. "I pray someday I can stop. It's like you are gambling ... you know you're gonna lose all the money but you keep" playing anyway.

If elected, Chuvit has vowed not to join any ruling coalition. Instead, he would stand alone as an independent outsider regardless of the outcome ? a one-man, anti-corruption reality check on government.

With the air and swagger of a mafia don, the stocky, mustachioed Chuvit plays the part of former sex boss well. Since selling off his brothels, he has become a kind of pimp-turned-Robin Hood ? exploiting his own sordid past to legitimize his crusade against graft.

It all began in 2003, when he was accused of the unauthorized, overnight demolition of scores of unlicensed bars and shops from a downtown Bangkok block he owned. The brutal move erupted into a major public scandal, and when the police failed to protect him, Chuvit fought back by exposing the behemoth bribes he had to pay to keep his mighty empire of flesh running.

Confirming that open secret turned him into an unlikely folk hero among Bangkok residents, eclipsing the demolition itself and underscoring public revulsion against official corruption. The Nation newspaper declared him "Person of the Year."

Eight years on, he said, corruption is still "eating this country and nobody cares." He admits there's not much he can do about it, but whoever listens will "hear the truth ... the street truth."

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand but rarely prosecuted. Chuvit's massage parlors were thinly disguised brothels, and he doesn't see anything wrong with them ? except the payoffs police demanded ($300,000 a month, he claims, not to mention the Rolex watches and free services thrown in on top).

Chalidaporn Songsamphan, who teaches political science at Thammasat University, said Chuvit "might appear to be a clown, but he's very serious about politics."

"He's been able to touch the hearts of people in Bangkok because he's straightforward," she said. "He speaks the language of many in the middle class who are not happy with the Thai leadership, and they view him as a real alternative."

Chuvit's campaign trail has taken him all over the country, and last week it led to electoral ground in the capital no other candidate has dared touch: one of the city's sleaziest red-light districts.

"I'm not asking for much," Chuvit called out as he wandered through neon-lit alleyways of Patpong, where go-go girls waved excitedly from heaving barroom doorways. "If you are a family of 10, just give me five votes!"

Patpong, he said, is symbolic of the nation's hypocrisy: A part of society "which everybody outside Thailand knows ? but no one (here) accepts."

"No one accepts even that they have sex in Thailand, that they have a sex business," he said, shaking his head. "The Thai people always, you know, they always smile as you can see, but they never talk the truth."

That's why one campaign poster shows a smiling, tie-sporting Chuvit proudly shaking the paw of his four-year-old white bull terrier, Moto Moto. Honesty, trustworthiness ? "Why they have that in the dog," he asked, "and you don't have that in the politics?"

Chuvit clearly relishes the role of maverick. He may be the only candidate to have tweeted a photo of himself "planking" ? the Internet craze in which people lie face down in a public place and upload it online.

His Rak Thailand ("Love Thailand") party has erected hundreds of placards in English so the rest of the world "can know what is happening" here. The signs say simply: "Against Corruption."

Chuvit spent several years in the U.S while in his 20s, attending a string of colleges but graduating from none. Still, he garnered an appreciation of American-style capitalism, and a penchant for outspokenness.

After returning home, he made a fortune during a late 1980s real estate boom. When a client took him to an upscale massage parlor, he had an epiphany. "I said `Oh wow, it's good!' It's like a Hugh Hefner: You know, surrounded by the beautiful girls, making money."

In his heyday, Chuvit commanded half a dozen jacuzzi-filled pleasure palaces ? Victoria's Secret, Honolulu Love Boat, Copa Cobana ? employing more than 1,000 women who lined up behind huge glass "fishbowls" with numbers pinned on skimpy dresses for customers to choose.

He sold his slice of the sex business years ago, and says he's done with it for good. But when people ask about his former life, "I say yes ... I should go back to the massage parlors," he sighed. "Because that was better ? cleaner than politics."

In politics you have to "look smart, talk smart, but it's not good," Chuvit said. "This is real life, and the people in real life look like me."

WordPlay @ YCA | Say What Magazine Online

In a less-than-crowded room of about 15 people, the atmosphere was welcoming and peaceful at Young Chicago Authors. As you walked in, you sensed the vibe of friendship. A place where everyone had something in common. Poetry was their voice. A voice that echoed off the brick walls and bounced into the minds of all-too-knowing friends.

WordPlay, a weekly creative writing workshop and open mic, is a place to experiment and practice new material in a welcoming environment without fear of ridicule or judgement.

?WordPlay is a place where you can say stuff to people that listen,? said Sharrieff Muhammad, host of WordPlay on Tuesday. ?I started coming in 2002 and I keep coming back because it?s real.?

WordPlay has been around for over 10 years and is the longest running youth open mic in Chicago. It was created because, like any creative writing endeavor in Chicago, ??.there was an eternal need for a safe space where young people can express themselves,? said WordPlay Director Robbie Q. Telfer.

Every week there is a featured speaker. ?We try to get a diverse group of people, not only by demographics but their style and way of art as well,? stated Telfer. ?We also only get nice people since the budget was cut. So no jerks,? he jokingly responded.

This week?s featured speaker was Defcee?s Adam Levin. (To hear some of his work, visit his site, www.defcee.bandcamp.com.)

In addition to?the featured speaker, many other poets from around the city, such as Emanuel Vinson, Britteney Black Rose Kapri, and Sketch 185 all graced the floor of YCA?s Wordplay open mic.

Vinson performed a piece entitled, ?Your Face.? He performed in a captivating way that left you feeling as if you knew exactly what he was speaking about. After walking away his lines still reverberate through the minds of those that attended.

Another well-known poet in the open mic/spoken word community is Sketch 185, who performed a piece he calls ?New Age to the Middle Finger,? a personal remix to Nas?s song ?New York State of Mind.?

Wordplay is every Tuesday, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Young Chicago Authors offices in Wicker Park.

3 Sets of Tennis Elbow Treatment Exercises for Self Cure

Here are some tennis elbow exercises that can help ease the pain caused by this injury. In addition to exercising in case your pain is severe you can apply heat or ice to the elbow. Conventional medicines to treat this condition include anti-inflammatory drugs, cortisone injections and surgery, among others. Some doctors prescribe wearing a tennis elbow brace. Certain exercises can also help to strengthen the elbow muscles and tendons. Yoga is also very effective in treatment of this condition.

To ease pain caused due to this injury the following exercises are worth a try

Stretching: Start with extending the elbow to the point where it does not hurt, and hold for 20 seconds. You can do this 5 to 10 times a day, and gradually increase the extension as your pain eases. A prayer stretch, when you put your arms in front of your chest, and join your palms as if in prayer, will help increase flexibility of your wrists. Slowly stretching the wrist will help you regain movement in your wrists.

Flexibility exercises. Place your arm on a table with the palm facing up. Try to touch your little finger to your thumb. Repeat with the forefinger and all other fingers, holding each time for 10 to 20 seconds. Another exercise is to make a fist, and rotate the wrist slowly, stretching as much as you can. Finally, with your palm facing down on a table, flip it so that it?s facing up. Repeat this 20 times.

Strength training. This is one of the elbow treatment exercises that will help your arm recover fast and ensure that the injury does not re-occur. Place your arm on a bench, and a light weight in your hand. Curl your wrist to bring the weight towards you. Do this 10 -15 times everyday and increase the number of sets gradually as your pain eases. You can also try reverse curl with your palms facing the floor. Another favorite exercise is to squeeze a tennis ball as much as you can, many times a day.

Yoga poses like Bhujangasana or Cobra Pose and wrist side body stretch are also excellent tennis elbow treatment exercises popularly recommended for natural healing of the injury.

Nokia's N950 splayed by FCC, 12-megapixel camera lurking within

Our friends over at the FCC have somehow both scored and already torn asunder Nokia's new flagship MeeGo development phone. Slicing and dicing Espoo's latest confirms the watered-down N9 specs we'd previously heard about, except for one: a 12-megapixel camera. An intriguing addition, as the N950's official specs list an 8-megapixel shooter, which the Finnish firm touted as "different" than the unit in its brother. Perhaps different means the additional 4-megapixels we spotted earlier this year? Sure, last minute component changes aren't unheard of, but if you ever manage to convince the Finns to throw one your way, do us a favor and let us know what it's packing. Ok?

Juneteenth | Current World News

At the start of the event, which marks the end of slavery in the United States celebrates the Rev. Michael Turner of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, a description of the joy that erupted on January 1, 1863, when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth? The night when the New Year I thought it was a big party,? said Turner. ?There were shouts of praise and thank God ? They came out of darkness and light, slavery and freedom, as a result of this great proclamation of emancipation.?

But it would be years before slavery was abolished in the country. Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery, commemorated the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers told the slaves in Galveston, Texas, now Fri

Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons dies (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Clarence Clemons, the burly saxophone player who played a crucial role in shaping Bruce Springsteen's early sound, died on Saturday, six days after suffering a stroke at his Florida home. He was 69.

"It is with overwhelming sadness that we inform our friends and fans that at 7:00 tonight, Saturday, June 18, our beloved friend and bandmate, Clarence Clemons passed away," Springsteen said on his website, adding the cause was complications from Clemons' stroke last Sunday.

"His loss is immeasurable and we are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly forty years," Springsteen added.

Clemons, dubbed the "Big Man," started working with Springsteen in 1971 and was a charter member of the backing group that came to be known as the E Street Band.

His gritty, evocative saxophone solos powered such notable Springsteen songs as "Born to Run," "Jungleland," "Prove It All Night," "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out," and "Badlands."

On stage, Clemons proved a worthy foil for Springsteen and his bandmates. In a 1975 concert review, Rolling Stone said Clemons betrayed an "ominous cool" in contrast to guitarist Steven Van Zandt's "strange hipster frenzy."

"Clarence was the big black saxophone player who completely represented the tradition of rock 'n' roll and R&B," Van Zandt told Britain's Mojo magazine in 2006.

Alongside Van Zandt, Clemons personified the E Street Band, and he took it hard when Springsteen broke up the group for a decade in 1989. But by then, Clemons was being used less in the studio. On stage, he was often reduced to playing tambourine or engaging in crowd-pleasing theatrics, like kissing Springsteen during the live staple "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)."

He also dabbled in acting, enjoyed a solo hit single with Jackson Browne, 1985's ""You're a Friend of Mine," toured with Ringo Starr and even played on two tracks on pop singer Lady Gaga's new album.

'PURE HELL'

Clemons' death came three years after organist Danny Federici, Springsteen's longest-serving musical partner, lost a three-year battle with cancer.

Clemons had been in ill health in recent years, suffering back and hip problems. He had double knee-replacement surgery in 2008, and walked for the first time in three months when Springsteen and the E Street Band played the Super Bowl early in 2009. The band's eight-month world tour that year was "pure hell," he told Rolling Stone earlier this year.

Clemons was born January 11, 1942 in Norfolk, Virginia, and played saxophone in high school where he was also a promising football player. A car crash ended his professional sporting dreams, and he went on to become a social worker, family man and barroom rocker.

His first meeting with Springsteen was auspicious. Clemons had heard about a hot young rocker on the Asbury Park, New Jersey, scene, and walked into one of his club shows on a bitterly windy night. A gust of wind ripped the door from his hand, and it flew down the street. All eyes turned to Clemons, and Springsteen readily agreed when he asked to sit in with him.

"When I first walked on that stage and hit the first note, I saw things that are happening today, then," he told Reuters in 2009. "I knew that he (Springsteen) was what I was looking for and I was what he was looking for to take that next step to the big time. It was just love, man, at first sight."

During sessions for Springsteen's 1975 breakthrough "Born to Run," Clemons spent 16 hours recording his solo on "Jungleland," the nine-minute track that closes the album.

"Creating is like religion," Clemons said later of the marathon session. "I was willing to relinquish myself to him (Springsteen). I've had people say to me, 'That sax solo saved my life.' So I did my job."

Clemons was used more sparingly in later years as Springsteen opted to emphasize the guitars (1978's "Darkness on the Edge of Town") or recorded largely solo (1982's "Nebraska" and 1987's "Tunnel of Love").

In 2009, he published his memoir, "Big Man: Real Life and Tall Tales," co-written with his friend Don Reo.

Why Crystal Harris called off wedding to Hugh Hefner: "This isn't the lifestyle for me"

By Kate Stanhope,

Crystal Harris called off her wedding to Hugh Hefner just days before because she realized she would never be able to adjust his unique lifestyle.

"I called it off because I didn't think it was the right thing for me to do," she told "On-Air with Ryan Seacrest" Wednesday morning. "Hef's lifestyle isn't the most normal lifestyle. This isn't the lifestyle for me, multiple girls all around. It's not the lifestyle I wanted."

Crystal Harris calls off wedding to Hugh Hefner

Harris, 25, and Hefner, 85, announced Tuesday that their Saturday nuptials had been called off, with Hefner tweeting that his ex-fianc?e had a "change of heart." The two got engaged in December. This would have been Hefner's third marriage.

"For a while I've been having second thoughts about everything. I haven't really been at peace with myself lately. I didn't think it was really fair to him," she said in the radio interview. "It was all happening too fast for me. .... Was this what I wanted?"

Holly Madison on Hef's engagement: I hope he's making the right decision

Harris said Hefner understood her position and denied earlier reports of an argument. "It was mutual between Hef and I," she said. "We both agreed that it wasn't the best idea to get married. He was doing it for me because he thought it was what I wanted."

Harris also denied reports that she has been dating Jordan McGraw, the son of TV personality Dr. Phil. "No. Not seeing someone else."

The last-minute change of plans has been made more awkward by the fact that the newest issue of Playboy refers to Harris as "Mrs. Crystal Hefner" on its July cover.

Despite the split, Harris said Hefner is doing great. "I feel happy and at peace that everything will be OK," she said. "I respect him more than anything, and we're still going to be really close."

It could have been a mistake, an emergency, or a simple miscalculation ? financial missteps in life happen to us all. When they do, it seems as though all of the patience and the customer service that all of your financial organizations were willing to give you are suddenly replaced by constant demands and an unwillingness to understand the situation

The realities of financial hardship are unforgiving, but you do have a choice. It is time to seek budget and credit counseling from a professional.

Professionals Make Their Living Helping You

Unlike the financial institutions, whose job it is to take your money from you, a financial professional is paid to stand as a firm wall between you and your creditors. The right financial professional will not only help you out of your current situation, but will also instill in you financial habits that will keep you out of any similar types of situations, no matter what curveballs that life may throw at you.

A budget and credit counseling professional will teach you how to better budget resources, negotiate your payments into a manageable payback schedule, and monitor your progress as you build back your good credit, your lifestyle, and your financial reputation.

What To Look For In A Financial Professional

The right financial professional will understand what you are going through, not just academically, but personally, as well. Many times financial missteps are taken in times of emotional hardship, and as your liaison between your creditors and you, your financial advisor will be able to quantify your situation into a language of dollars and cents that the creditors can understand.

Your financial professional should begin to budget resources and give you ideas on reallocation quite soon upon receiving all pertinent information about your financial situation. He or she should be able to identify places that you might not have seen where you can cut back spending in order to pay back debt, build up emergency savings accounts, and maintain an adequate style of life for you and your dependents.

The right financial professional will not judge you, nor belittle you, but will educate you on the nuances of credit, giving you tips on how to best use credit next time in your unique situation. He or she will teach you how to separate matters of person and business, as well as matters of emotion and finance, helping you use your resources in a more structured and efficient way.

The author has an immense knowledge on budget and credit counseling. More budget resources could be found on his website.

BofA's Short Sales Outnumber Its Foreclosures | REAL ESTATE NEWS ...

Bank of America seems to be favoring short sales over foreclosures, at least according to new housing data released this week. The banking giant completed more short sale transactions than foreclosure sales every month for the last year and a half, HousingWire reports. Bank of America completed more than 95,000 short sales in 2010?more than double compared to the year prior.

BofA as well as other banks say the Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives program, introduced in April 2010, has helped make it easier to collect documents and reduce the time it takes to close on a short sale transaction. For example, Citigroup says it has dropped its average closing time from 120 days (from when the property was listed to when it closes) to 83 day currently.

?It?s a lot easier to qualify now for HAFA than it was in 2010. All I need is a hardship affidavit and one water bill. We?re trying to make it as easy as possible,? David Sunlin, Bank of America?s real estate management executive, told HousingWire.

Beloved football coach passes away

Kind, caring, determined, passionate, insightful. These are a few of many traits that Seaholm head football coach Nick Deane will be remembered for, before his tragic passing on May 30 from a sudden heart attack.

Deane, who is survived by his wife and four kids, was 52 years old and was entering his first year as the head football coach at Seaholm after serving two years as the offensive coordinator.

The news of his death had players like me and the rest of my teammates in tragic disbelief. Hearing the words from Principal Terry Piper over the PA the next morning at school had over 75 of our guys feeling such sorrow, grief, and even confusion.

How could such a dreadful event happen to such an honorable man? Questions like these were asked by many of us who came together to mourn the loss of Deane, but to also celebrate the valuable time we had with him.

Coach Deane was more than just a great football coach, he was a great man.

I remember the first time meeting Deane back in the early summer of 2009. I was just a scrawny JV kid going into my sophomore year who had no business on the varsity level- where Deane was the offensive coordinator at the time- but Coach still went out of his way to introduce himself to me.

Even though I?m sure he did this to nearly every kid in the program, he made me feel special. He asked me what position I was, what my goals were for the season, and he told me that he couldn?t wait to see me at the varsity level at some point down the road. I felt like I belonged, and I?m sure Coach made other kids feel the same way.

I could?ve just as easily been the worst football player out there but it didn?t matter; Coach Deane gave his everlasting gratitude to every kid in the program that came along with great enthusiasm.

Just a couple of months ago, Coach again went out of his way to lend a helping hand.

It was just a few days after my dog had passed away in April and I was up at the school for a football meeting with the coaches and players. Before we got underway, Coach pulled me aside and personally gave his sympathy for what I was going through and asked if there was anything he could do. I thanked him for the support, and told him that I?ll heal with time. He then gave me a hug and said that my family and I will be in his prayers as we get through our tough times.

That was just the type of man Coach was. It was all genuine good-heartedness.

It was a given that whenever you?d see Coach Deane around, he?d have a big smile on his face. His positive attitude is something he left the program with as the season lurks just around the corner.

He had Seaholm Football heading in a new, great direction that has many of us players ecstatic for the season to begin.

But the most excited of all was definitely the head man himself.

Deane brought in a sense of stability and structure right from Day One when he took over as head coach, as he had everything laid out on a map. He had everything planned out: every week, every practice, every drill.

His offseason programs have already been showing great results. Deane singlehandedly created programs focusing on strength and skill development as well as character building exercises.

A new workout regimen was put into motion by Coach that produced a greater turnout than in years past. Five days a week players have been working to get faster, stronger, and bigger as the season approaches.

Other installments include the newly founded Quarterback University. Many Seaholm players that play quarterback attended these workouts that specifically honed in on becoming a better quarterback. These were held once a week every Sunday during the offseason.

Coach Deane was a man of great character, and he wanted to implant those same values into his players. Once a month, the team would meet up for a new program called Leadership Academy.

Each meeting would bring a new focus topic that pinpointed a different aspect of leadership.

From these meetings, we formulated our team motto: One Maple, Nothing Less. The motto was first introduced to us by Coach Deane, and we bought in on it. We felt that the motto fit our team because our team is adamant on the fact that every kid plays a role, no matter who you are.

It highlights that we are a team not made up of individuals, but that we all are one unit. No matter if we win or lose, we always know that we battle together, as one.

On the Seaholm Football team website, the front page reads: ?We are better for having known Coach Deane, and for having shared time with him.?

I especially believe this is true. Coach Deane?s impact on not just my life, but on all of my teammates? lives is immense. He graced us with his positive attitude, smile, and compassion.

I can?t put into words how powerful an effect Coach has had on my life. I?ll never truly understand why this tragedy has happened, and I don?t think anyone ever will. But that?s not what I think about when Coach Deane crosses my mind. Today I think about how my time with Coach was a true blessing, and I recognize that I am one of the lucky few to have ever crossed paths with a man like Coach Deane.

Coach, you will never be forgotten.

India?s $35 Sakshat Tablet Finally Arrives, Offered for $49

Sakshat 49 dollar Android Tablet

India?s $35 Sakshat tablet is finally getting ready to ship at a slightly higher price of $49. The oft-delayed Android table is set to ship 10,000 seven-inch units to IIT-Rajasthan by the end of June, while an additional 90,000 units may ship soon after with the goverment covering half the cost, dropping them to just $25.

Features on the device are comparable to other Android tablets including 2GB RAM, front-facing camera and a 32GB hard drive, however the unit also features a relatively cheap construction which pushes down the cost.

The Sakshat has been in development for several years and was originally scrapped when India?s government decided the units were not up to par with computing standards which means the new gadgets are of better quality with only a slightly higher price point.

Greece: Leading Socialist quits ahead of reshuffle (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? A prominent Greek Socialist lawmaker resigned his seat in parliament Thursday, hours before Prime Minister George Papandreou was to announce a cabinet reshuffle.

Former public order minister Giorgos Floridis announced his resignation a day after the government and the opposition conservatives failed to create a coalition government designed to broaden support for vital austerity measures.

The resignation was the latest setback for Papandreou, who is facing harsh criticism from within his party before a crucial vote this month on a new round of austerity measures considered crucial to avoid a summer default.

The 55-year-old Floridis, who has fiercely criticized the slow pace of reforms in Greece, had been tipped to join the new government. His resignation does not affect the government majority in parliament as his seat will now go to another member of the Socialist party.

Surprise coalition talks between the government and rival conservatives collapsed Wednesday, despite weeks of pressure from the European Union on the two parties to reach cross-party consensus on cost-cutting measures.

"Unfortunately, the leaderships of the two main political parties have once again failed to rise to national circumstances, in a politically unforgivable way," Floridis wrote in his letter of resignation.

"Instead of sounding a national alert ... the parties resorted to making their own petty calculations. There is no clearer illustration of a worn-out and retiring political system."

Floridis, as deputy finance and public order minister, played a key role in preparations for the 2004 Olympics in Athens

Court denies US citizenship to American's son (AFP)

WASHINGTON (AFP) ? The US Supreme Court ruled Monday that a man who was born in Mexico of a Mexican mother and an American father is not entitled to US citizenship, even though the law discriminates on the basis of gender.

Without comment, the top US court upheld a 2008 decision by a federal appeals court in California that refused US citizenship to Ruben Flores-Villar, 36.

With the newest justice, Elena Kagan, recusing herself, the court split four to four. But in the rare event of a tie vote, the lower court decision is automatically upheld.

The background to the case is complex. Flores-Villar's parents were not married when he was born in Mexico to a Mexican woman, but he was raised in California by his American father.

In 2006, he was arrested and tried as an illegal alien, sentenced to three and a half years in prison and expelled to Mexico.

But in his appeal, Flores-Villar argued that the law on citizenship for a child born outside of the United States treats American mothers much differently than American fathers.

An American woman can transfer citizenship to her child if she has lived for a full year in the United States. A man on the other hand must prove he has lived at least five years in the United States after his 14th birthday.

In Flores-Villar's case, however, his father was only 16 years old when his son was born.

So Flores-Villar appealed on the basis that the law violated his constitutional right to equal treatment under the law.

The court on Monday did not say how individual justices voted but the case has been before them for seven months, which suggests that the decision was preceded by a long debate.

During a hearing in November, the most conservative justices manifested their intention to leave it to Congress whether to fix the anomaly in the law.

Advice On Choosing The Best Web Hosting Provider For Businesses In ...

Whether you?re located in the United Kingdom or anywhere else, you should try to get the right web hosting company for your business. You can choose from a number of UK webhosting.

Finding a web hosting UK company that suits your needs is a cinch. One good thing about having an online business is that you can determine your own schedule. You can work whenever and wherever you want. In the right market, it?s an ideal job. Your online business will rely largely on your website, which is why it?s important to choose your UK webhosting provider wisely. There are lots of attractive packages being offered by domain name retailers, and you should scrutinize each one carefully. You should compare the offers of different companies before you can even decide on which package to avail of.

Sometimes you don?t actually save money by getting the cheapest offer. You might even end up spending more money in the long run, and in this case going for a slightly pricier (but dependable) web host would actually be the better investment. But this doesn?t mean that you?d have to spend a lot to get quality service. You should make sure that you get a web host which suits not only your business?s needs, but your budget as well. You can choose from different modes of payment as well, from monthly, bi-monthly, and annual payments.

Another thing to keep in mind is the reputability of the company. You can check this out by doing an online search for a comparison of web hosting companies on the market. A company with an outstanding reputation usually has this for a good reason. This means that others have used this service and believe that this hosting site is one of the better ones around. Even if there are no reviews at all, this is a good sign. This is because most people would make a review if they have something to complain about. You can assume that the product is good if there are no reviews about it.

The reliability of the webhost is also important. There?s no point paying for web hosting if visitors can not actually see your website. You should also make sure the bandwidth limit that the company lets a customer have. Good web hosts will give their customers lots of storage space and generous bandwidth allowances, since these things are the lifeblood of online businesses. By pinpointing which aspects of a webhost your online business will benefit from the most, you can easily compare and identify webhosting companies. The time and effort needed in order to do this will be worth it since you?ll actually be more efficient in finding a webhost. You can consider this a good investment.

For UK web hosting goto UK Web Solutions Direct. UWSD can also offer a UK VPS.

Small Business Spend Management -- Indirect Buying, Travel, Strategic

In the first post in this series, I provided a few war stories (and lessons) about how my company, Azul Partners (the parent of Spend Matters, MetalMiner and some other ventures), has learned from our buying mistakes as we've scaled the business. In the next installment of this analysis, I'll share some additional tips from a recent WSJ column that caught my eye. Perhaps not surprisingly, author Barbara Haislip makes some recommendations that are useful for even larger companies and procurement team members looking to small business for possible buying inspiration. One suggestion, on the shipping side, doesn't go far enough in my opinion. The idea, automated address verification to avoid order returns from incorrect ship to addresses, has been around in manually for some time. Using a tool to show employees the costs of their own shipping decisions (e.g., priority overnight vs. standard overnight) would be more valuable. Moreover, companies with any material volume of small parcel spend -- even small ones -- would be well advised to work through intermediaries that may have special rates with preferred carriers (Costco used to have a pre-paid plan with DHL that we used, for example). Regardless, all companies should audit, on a monthly basis, the actual performance of the carrier and should request immediate credits for performance specifications not met. Trust me, the credits will be real.

In other areas, the WSJ column does a good job of laying out the basics from a small company procurement angle (though the choice of words may not be the best). For example, "play hard ball." One executive at a small business "urges the procurement team...to get bids from three different vendors to ensure the best deal. And he encourages them to ask vendors for 10% off the cost of any item they're purchasing." We're all for negotiating here at Spend Matters, but playing hardball is not the same as playing smart with suppliers. You may not always have to get the proverbial three bids in a box and negotiate -- but understand the true benchmark for an item or service. This may take one bid (and some background research online). It may take 20. But if you know the benchmark, you'll know you're getting a good deal. Moreover, such knowledge may allow you to negotiate not only on price, but other cost drivers (e.g., lead-times, warranty, etc.).

Even though the afore-quoted gentleman suggests that "playing hard ball" with suppliers may be too ready to swing for the vendor fences -- and we all know the batting averages of sluggers versus base hitters, not to mention the fact most people who try to hit home runs with any regularity can't -- I do agree with his suggestion to create a "savings pool" in the company. Under this model, "the company contributes 2% of any savings on a purchase to its employees." Such an idea can certainly create a culture of thrift. But simply encouraging employees to spend less through an internal rebate program is not as simple as it sounds. Just as it is in big company procurement, defining the baseline can prove tricky as can making employees focus on total cost, not just unit cost.

Still, anything a small business can do to create a culture of spend savings is a smart move in our view.

- Jason Busch

The Amount Of Contacts Available Today Could Leave Your Eyes ...

Contact lenses have come a long way over the years and can now treat a range of vision problems, even astigmatism. What?s more, they remain an effective way to treat nearsightedness and farsightedness. Buying contact lenses online has never been so popular and now they?re used not only treat vision problems but allow you to change the colour and appearance of your eye cosmetically. There are two main types of contact lenses on the market today: soft and rigid gas permeable

Soft contacts are perhaps the most popular of the two and are made of a flexible, soft plastic that lets oxygen through into the cornea. Soft lenses are much easier to get used to and are more comfortable than the rigid gas permeable style, making them easy for first-timers to master. New soft lenses even use a silicone-hydrogel that?s designed to allow even more oxygen into the eye during use, making them safer and more comfortable.

Daily wear soft contact lenses are a type of lens that?s made with a soft polymer-plastic that has been combined with water, allowing oxygen to pass through the material. A large amount of the daily wear lenses on the market today also offer a degree of UV protection form the sun?s rays. Today, most soft contact lenses sold are disposable and designed to be thrown in the trash after a period of use. There are many reasons to select a daily wear lens. Infection can be reduced by the wearer if fresh contacts are used regularly, and they enhance the comfort for the wearer. This is pertinent for people who?s eyes overproduce protein which can leave to deposits on the actual lenses.

The ability to change contacts on a daily, weekly or monthly basis also means less cleaning is required. Unfortunately, soft contacts have disadvantages as well. They are more prone to absorbing pollutants from the hands, which may hurt or irritate your eyes. They?re also more fragile than hard lenses. Daily disposable lenses are only worn for a single day and thrown away. The benefits of these lenses is that they require less cleaning, maintenance which in turn leads to lower irritation of the eye. These contact lenses are the ideal choice if you suffer from allergies because they prevent dry, itchy eyes.

Silicone extended wear lenses, on the other hand, are made with a silicone hydrogel that allows use for up to thirty days and nights. These lenses have a special material that?s designed to prevent protein build-up and reduce red, itchy eyes. Coloured soft contact lenses are another option that?s becoming very popular. There are four types of coloured lenses. The first is visibility tint, which have a light tint that helps you find the lens if you drop it but do not affect the colour of your eye. Enhancement tint have a translucent tint that can enhance your natural eye colour.

Colour tinted lenses are darker and will change the colour of your eyes. To help athletes in sport, or people in outdoor situations where different shades are prevelant, the light filtering tint lenses have been designed. A different type of lens is the RGP, rigid gas permeable, these are more durable and protein does not build up as much on the lens. These lenses are usually less costly because they do have a longer life spam and are easier to use. Many people find it takes weeks to get used to RGP lenses, however, because they can be uncomfortable. All of the above can be purchased in store or contact lenses online

Weiner Resignation Up to Constituents, Not Democratic Party (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | After a week of denials followed by a tearful news conference admission that he sent lewd pictures over twitter to a woman in Seattle, Rep. Weiner is not resigning nor his constituents wants him to. He is and has been the front and center of the liberal cause, defending it, pushing it and exposing the GOP agenda the way he should.

He is better known for his passionate speeches in the floor of the house and his television appearances where he is not afraid to present the issues the way the democratic base wants to hear it, that is why he is one of a kind and shouldn't resign.

The congressman has been a rising star and is married to a long time Hillary Clinton aide, Huma Abedin. He is passionate in the causes he supports, which included the health care act and the recently passed bill for 9/11 first responders. He is a voice to many on left who felt that the president had compromised too much and under achieved his signature Health Care Act, the Financial reform Act, and extended the Bush tax cuts to the rich.

Thus, his resignation, if it ever arrives, will deprive the Democratic base someone who did not abandon the liberal cause, and energizes them to coalesce against the Republicans whom they feel too much was ceded to.

New pictures emerged Sunday and were posted on the TMZ gossip news website. These pictures, which appear to have been taken in the House of Representatives gymnasium, could be harmful and might bring more pressure for him to resign. AFP reported Sunday that Democrats stepped up their call for him to resign in light of the new photos that emerged, which might serve as a proof that he used Congressional resources to send lewd pictures online.

Rep. Weiner announced Saturday he was taking a short leave of absence to seek treatment. The announcement came after the emergence of yet another text messages he sent to a 17-year-old girl. Police in New Castle, Del., confirmed that they interviewed the teenager and deemed no harm was done. Parents of the teenager expressed concern that the congressman sent private messages to their daughter.

"It seems to me extraordinarily difficult that he can proceed to represent his constituents in an effective way given the circumstances this bizarre behavior has led to" the number two House Democratic leader Hoyer told CBS's "Face the Nation" program this morning. Democratic leaders jumped on the band wagon to call for his resignation at the end of the week.

It remains to be seen if Rep. Weiner will be able to hold on to his office and his aspirations to become the next mayor of New York. A lot will also depend on how his constituents' opinion shifts in the coming days. If his constituents want him to serve that is what he should do and not crack under the pressure. It is up to the people of the 9th congressional district of New York to make the call for him to resign if they choose so, and not the leaders of the Democratic Party.

World stock markets down amid recovery woes (AP)

BANGKOK ? World stock markets mostly sank Monday as investors warily eyed a possible rate hike by China's central bank and evidence that recoveries in the world's major economies are sputtering.

Oil prices hovered below $99 a barrel, extending losses from Friday after a report said Saudi Arabia plans to boost its crude production. In currencies, the dollar was stronger against the yen and the euro.

European shares were mixed in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.1 percent to 5,770.81, while Germany's DAX lost 0.2 percent to 7,058.84. France's CAC-40 was 0.1 percent lower at 3,800.50.

Wall Street was set to rise after a string of jarring sessions, with Dow Jones industrial futures up 18 points to 11,891 and S&P 500 futures less than 2 points higher to 1,265.30.

Nouriel Roubini, a New York University economics professor who became a quasi-celebrity for predicting the financial crisis, cautioned against risky investments.

"In the last month, things have changed, the evidence is that maybe this is not just a soft patch but something worse," he said in a speech in Singapore.

"If your horizon is the next two or three months, I would be a bit defensive on equities," he said. "This is time to be cautious, and safe rather than sorry."

Earlier in Asian trading, Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.7 percent to close at 9,448.21 after the government reported that core machinery orders fell unexpectedly in April by 3.3 percent from the previous month.

The drop came as companies canceled orders following a devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan that destroyed or damaged scores of factories.

The decline was the first in four months, evidence that the twin disasters continue to take their toll on Japan's economy. The seasonally adjusted figure includes heavily electrical machinery, engines, machine tools, road vehicles and aircraft but excludes orders for ships and utilities because of their volatility.

Toyota Motor Corp. dropped 2.4 percent after announcing Friday that it expected its annual profit to dive 31 percent, hammered by production disruptions from parts shortages.

South Korea's Kospi closed 0.1 percent higher at 2,048.74, reversing losses earlier in the day. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index also finished higher after struggling for gains, closing 0.4 percent up at 22,508.08.

Linus Yip, a strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong, said the possibility of another interest rate hike by China's central bank was the main drag on markets.

But he said shares in Hong Kong, which have been steadily down in seven prior sessions, were possibly oversold and due for a recovery.

"I think maybe they are oversold," he said. "I think there is a possibility for Hong Kong to hit a short-term bottom and actually rebound within a week."

But mainland Chinese shares edged lower as market players reacted to data showing a dip in bank lending and awaited inflation figures due out Tuesday that could show the consumer price index surging to more than 6 percent.

The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.2 percent to 2,700.38 after dipping more than 1 percent earlier in the day. The Shenzhen Composite Index fell 0.2 percent to 1,110.89. Shares in non-ferrous metals, chemicals and information technology led the gains while food companies weakened.

"The economic data will not be favorable and there may be an interest rate hike this month. Also, trading volume is at a low level," said Peng Yunlang, an analyst based in Shanghai.

Aluminum Corporation of China Ltd., the country's biggest non-ferrous company, hit the daily limit of 10 percent, following recent news of its planned expansion of investments in rare earths assets.

Tsingtao Brewery Company Limited, one of the countries' main beer producers in China, lost 3.4 percent.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand also sank.

Adding to the gloom is the recession in Japan that resulted from the earthquake. Among other woes, the disaster resulted in a scarcity of key parts that disrupted manufacturing around the globe.

In the U.S., the economy isn't growing as quickly as expected due in part to high prices. Since the market's peak on April 29, more than 15 economic indicators, ranging from the number of new jobs added in May to how much consumers are spending at retailers, have been weaker than analysts had predicted.

On Wall Street on Friday, fears that the global economic recovery has stalled pushed the Dow Jones industrial average below 12,000 for the first time since March and drove the stock market lower for the sixth straight week. The Dow fell 1.4 percent to close at 11,951.91. The S&P 500 index fell 1.4 percent to 1,270.98. The Nasdaq dropped 1.5 percent to 2,643.73.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 54 cents to $98.75 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract lost $2.64 to settle at $99.29 on the Nymex on Friday.

The euro was lower at $1.4329 from $1.4355 from late trading in New York. The dollar strengthened to 80.38 yen from 80.32 yen.
