Radio Communications: Smart Phone Radio Will Challenge Satellite ...

I have had a "smartphone" for a couple of years, but only recently did my provider finally make the iPhone available and as soon as my contract came up I jumped at the chance.? The iPhone has exceeded my expectations and has opened the world of online radio to me everywhere. Quite frankly, I think satellite radio may be challenged by this medium.

Everyone has a cell phone and not everyone wants to spring for a satellite radio and service. Furthermore, I have noticed when I have listened to a friend's satellite radio that it has reception limitations such as tunnels. The same might be said of a smartphone, but as I said, most people already have a smartphone and other reasons for having it as well.?

I am a big user of Pandora and Stitcher which allow you to program stations with content groups of your choosing. You can also use these online through your computer.

Additionally, many car stereo systems have a USB port to connect to-- meaning the smart phone can be used right through the car's own sound system.

Bottomline: Before you spring for satellite radio, consider using your smartphone as a radio . . .
