Canadian economy grows 1.8 percent in Q2, beating forecasts

(Reuters) - Canada's economy grew at an annualized 1.8 percent in the second quarter, matching the rate of the previous quarter, as strong business investment offset a small fiscal drag, Statistics Canada said on Friday.

Business investment in plant and equipment advanced at a non-annualized rate of 2.3 percent, the fastest pace since the second quarter of 2011, and inventories also grew.

On a monthly basis, Canada's economy grew by a larger-than-expected 0.2 percent in June from May, as goods production rose on strong mining and oil and gas extraction.

Uncoiling the cucumber's enigma: Biological mechanism for coiling, and unusual type of spring discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In the creeping plant's tendrils, researchers discover a biological mechanism for coiling and stumble upon an unusual type of spring

Captivated by a strange coiling behavior in the grasping tendrils of the cucumber plant, researchers at Harvard University have characterized a new type of spring that is soft when pulled gently and stiff when pulled strongly.

Instead of unwinding to a flat ribbon under stress, as an untwisted coil normally would, the cucumber's tendrils actually coil further. Understanding this counterintuitive behavior required a combination of head scratching, physical modeling, mathematical modeling, and cell biology -- not to mention a large quantity of silicone.

The result, published in the August 31 issue of Science, describes the mechanism by which coiling occurs in the cucumber plant and suggests a new type of bio-inspired twistless spring.

Led by principal investigator L. Mahadevan, Lola England de Valpine Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Professor of Physics at Harvard, and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, the researchers were motivated by simple curiosity about the natural world.

"Nature has solved all kinds of energetic and mechanical problems, doing it very slowly and really getting it right," says lead author Sharon Gerbode, a former postdoctoral fellow at SEAS who has now advanced to a faculty position in the physics department at Harvey Mudd College. "But few people have studied biological mechanisms from the point of view of a physicist or an engineer. We barely had to scratch the surface with this question about the cucumber -- how does it coil? What could be a simpler question? And what we actually found was this new kind of spring that no one had characterized before."

Well known to botanists and gardeners, the coiling tendrils of climbing plants like cucumbers, sweet peas, and grape vines allow the plants to hoist themselves up towards sunlight and secure themselves tightly to existing structures like trees or trellises. Yet the biological and physical mechanism of this coiling, at the level of the plant's cells and tissues, has remained a mystery.

A cucumber tendril begins as a straight stem that elongates until it finds something to latch onto. Then, secured at both ends, it forms a left-handed helix and a right-handed helix, joined at the center by a "perversion" -- Charles Darwin's strikingly Victorian term for the point at which the coiling changes direction.

"It's easy to create one of these twistless springs with a telephone cord," says Gerbode, "and they're annoying. But with the phone cord, you can pull on both ends and it will straighten out into a flat ribbon. What's strange about the cucumber tendril is that if you pull on the ends, it actually overwinds, adding more turns to both helices."

To explore the mechanism for this behavior, Gerbode and her Harvard colleagues took a closer look at the cells and tissue types inside the tendril.

A fibrous ribbon, made of thread-like cells called gelatinous fiber (g-fiber) cells, runs the length of each tendril. Two cell layers thick, this ribbon appears to provide the force required for the tendril to form a helix without the benefit of muscles. If the cells on one side of such a ribbon were to contract, the researchers thought, it would force the ribbon to curve and coil.

Gerbode and her coauthor Joshua Puzey (Ph.D. '12), who was studying organismic and evolutionary biology in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at the time, tried to reconstruct this fiber ribbon with a silicone model. They stretched a sheet of elastic silicone, secured the ends, and then spread a thin layer of silicone caulk across its surface. When the caulk cured, they cut a thin strip off the model, held both ends, and watched it coil into a pair of perfect helices. When they pulled on both ends, however, it simply unraveled and lay flat, adding no extra coils as they had hoped.

"This is when I spent a lot of time pulling on telephone cords," Gerbode admits.

The clue, as it turns out, was inside the g-fiber cells. These cells have been studied extensively in trees; they have the ability to shrink or elongate, thanks to a special type of architecture in the cell wall.

"What we think may be happening is that the inner cell layer of the tendril has more lignin in it, which is a sort of glue that gives cell walls stiffness and holds together the cellulose microfibrils, which are like rebar in the cells," explains Puzey. "We thought this stiffness must be related to the coiling somehow."

To test this idea, Gerbode and Puzey glued a fabric ribbon to one side of their silicone model and a copper wire to the other side. At last, the silicone strip formed a pair of helices that overwound, just like the cucumber tendril.

The structure they stumbled upon is a spring made of two joined, opposite-handed helices whose bending stiffness is higher than their twisting stiffness. In other words, to form this specific structure, the materials involved have to make it easier for the ribbon to twist axially than to change its curvature. Through mathematical models developed by Mahadevan and coauthor Andrew McCormick (a physics graduate student in GSAS), the team was able to fully understand the parameters and synthesize a simple principle for the design of these springs.

The final stage in the research was to address the biological implications. By extracting the fiber ribbon from a cucumber tendril, Mahadevan's group had already noticed that moisture was playing a role in the spring's behavior. As the extracted ribbon dried out, its stiffness increased and it coiled more tightly. Lignin is also known to be hydrophobic, repelling water. What's more, Mahadevan's team measured the mechanical response of young tendrils and older ones, finding that the older tendrils put up much more resistance to pulling, a fact that they explained using a combination of theory and computer simulations.

Though the group has not yet explored these findings from an evolutionary perspective, they hypothesize that the mature coil structure allows the climbing plants just the right amount of structural flexibility.

"You want the plant to make a nice strong, secure connection, but you also don't want it to be too stiff or to snap," explains Gerbode. "You want it to have a little bit of flexibility so that if the wind blows or an animal brushes past it, it doesn't break. So one possibility is that this overwinding allows the plant to easily accommodate small motions, but then if something really serious happens it can get very stiff and protect itself."

To further study the evolutionary significance of the tendril's morphology, researchers would have to study the coils in numerous species and attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of that characteristic. Mahadevan suggests that such a project could provide important ecological insights.

"The advantage of using a tendril is that the plant saves on complex machinery to build structural supports such as trunks and branches," Mahadevan says. "The disadvantage is that it must depend on other species to build these supports. Thus, tendrils are an adaptation that is likely to develop only in regions replete with vegetation that can provide supports and where competition for resources is intense.

"The real question remains this: how difficult is it to evolve such tendril-like solutions?"

Now that nature has done the hard work, though, Mahadevan suggests that the benefits of understanding cucumber coils might be useful in technology -- but hastens to add that this work was driven by pure curiosity, not with an end product in mind.

"This is likely to be useful anywhere we need a spring with a tunable mechanical response," he says.

This work was supported by the MacArthur Foundation, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, and the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard. The researchers are now pursuing a patent on the technology, through the Wyss Institute.

Oil industry awaits Isaac passage, no damage reported

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Isaac battered the Gulf Coast on Wednesday causing flooding in southern Louisiana but so far no discernible damage to refineries or offshore oil and gas platforms.

Isaac, now a Category 1 hurricane, made landfall late Tuesday and was centered 45 miles southwest of New Orleans as of 11:00 a.m. EDT, provoking a dangerous storm surge and pelting coastal Louisiana with heavy rain that could prompt flooding through the day, the National Hurricane Center said.

Louisiana's coastal Plaquemines Parish reported flooding after storm waters flowed over a levee designed to protect the area.

The 247,000-barrel-per-day Phillips 66 Alliance refinery, which is located in the parish but on the opposite side of the Mississippi River from flooding, reported a power outage. Phillips said it wasn't able to confirm whether the storm had any other impact on the plant, which remained shut down.

Chevron said it would send crews out to assess its offshore platforms for any potential damage "when it's safe to do so."

Isaac was still packing winds up to 75 miles per hour. But energy industry analysts said the storm's passage left the Gulf's offshore oil and gas platforms without reported damages, which should allow production to restart soon. Energy firms had evacuated rigs in recent days.

The flooding in Plaquemines, the southernmost Parish in Louisiana located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, "is horrible for the people there, but I do not think this affects any oil and gas infrastructure," said Kenneth Medlock, an energy expert at Rice University's Baker Institute in Houston.

"The rigs offshore should be up in about a week," Medlock said. "The offshore facilities should be OK with regard to major damage ... I would not expect a prolonged production outage."

Williams Cos., which operates pipelines in the Gulf region, said that bad weather was still preventing any restaffing or restarting of oil and gas platforms that were evacuated offshore as Isaac approached.

The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 23 percent of U.S. oil production and 7 percent of natural gas output, most of which was shut down this week.

As of Tuesday, U.S. government figures showed 93 percent of offshore Gulf oil and two-thirds of natural gas output offline.

U.S. oil futures fell 1.2 percent to $95.20 a barrel by 11:49 a.m. EDT on Wednesday. U.S. gasoline futures were down 0.8 percent as many traders bet that Isaac would not damage refineries.

The Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), a major import terminal, said it remained shut. Pipelines connect LOOP to refineries that account for around half of U.S. refining capacity.

NO REFINERY DAMAGE REPORTS

Initial reports on refinery operations in Louisiana did not indicate damage to plants, although energy analysts said that could remain a concern through Wednesday.

Emergency management officials in Garyville, Louisiana, said there were no reports of flooding or damage at Marathon Petroleum Corp's 490,000 bpd refinery.

Independent refiner Valero Energy said crews were riding out the storm inside two of its shuttered Louisiana plants -- located in Meraux and Norco -- and would assess for any damages once Isaac had passed.

Louisiana typically processes around 3 million bpd in its plants, many of which are located in low-lying areas near the coast. The broader Gulf Coast region is home to a refining hub with 7.8 million bpd capacity, or 45 percent of the U.S. total.

As of 8:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, 12 percent, or 936,500 bpd, of Gulf Coast refining capacity was closed down as a precautionary measure. That figure was little changed from Tuesday's outages, the U.S. Department of Energy said.

Immune system expert takes on leukemia and lymphoma

Carl Ware, Ph.D., director of Sanford-Burnham?s Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center, was recently awarded a new five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, to examine how a family of cellular communication proteins?called cytokines?are disrupted in lymphoma and leukemia.

Leukemia and lymphoma are types of blood cancers?they can affect a person?s bone marrow, blood cells, lymph nodes, or other parts of the lymphatic system. According to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, one person in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer approximately every four minutes. While the survival rate for people with leukemia and lymphoma has increased in recent years due to research and new treatments, approximately 53,000 Americans died from these cancers in 2011.

Lymph node?the tissue where lymphoma originates?captured during the Ware lab?s previous experiments on HVEM and BTLA

Cytokines normally control the growth of white blood cells?immune cells that help the body fight infection. Two genes that encode cytokines?HVEM and BTLA?are frequently mutated in human lymphomas. The prognosis is worse for patients with these mutations. Researchers in Ware?s laboratory recently found new evidence that HVEM mutations in human lymphomas specifically alter cytokine function, wreaking havoc on cellular survival pathways and the immune system.

?This grant will allow us to explore how specific genetic changes?mutations?in cytokine genes contribute to the development of lymphoma,? Ware said. ?The cytokine gene we study, known as HVEM, is frequently mutated in cancers, particularly in follicular lymphoma. Our previous studies indicate that HVEM is important for regulating the immune defense against viruses. Now, we hypothesize that genetic changes in HVEM are not random, but specifically selected for?that they allow the cancer cell to evade immune controls. Understanding the nature of these mutations may allow us to design drugs that restore immune control of the lymphoma cell.

In this newest project, the team will further unravel the mechanisms behind HVEM and BTLA malfunction in human lymphoma cells. They will also examine the HVEM-BTLA system in mouse lymphoma models and use an array of molecules that can boost or block HVEM and BTLA cytokines to further probe their functions.

Ware and his team will also determine whether potential drugs directed at these cytokines can help stop the growth of lymphoma and leukemia.

?Ultimately, we hope these studies will provide the rationale to therapeutically manipulate these pathways as a method to treat leukemia, lymphoma, and related blood cancers,? Ware said. ?We?re thankful to the NIH for giving us the opportunity to pursue these ideas? and hopefully to save lives.?

Lundbeck says cancer drug approved in Canada

or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. Men and women keep dying, and U.S. policies keep accelerating the centrifugal forces that are driving the country toward civil conflict, which may have profound implications for future regional and international security." ? Pets can be infected with West Nile Virus, too | Aardvarks2Zebras

Humans aren?t the only ones susceptible to West Nile Virus (WNV) ? our pets can become infected, too. There?s no vaccine for WNV in pets, but the good news is that infections in dogs and cats are rare and usually not fatal. Also, pets can?t transmit WNV to humans. The only way WNV can be transmitted to humans and pets is through a bite from an infected mosquito.

Most pets won?t display any symptoms of WNV infection, the CDC says, and ?treatment would be supportive (managing symptoms, if present) and consistent with standard veterinary practices for animals infected with a viral agent.?

However, the CDC says it?s still important to take precautions to protect your pets. But don?t get out the mosquito spray that you use on yourself when going outdoors. ?DEET-based repellents, which are recommended for humans, are not approved for veterinary use (largely because animals tend to ingest them by licking),? the CDC says (emphasis is theirs). A veterinarian can offer advice on products to use.

The easiest way to protect both yourself and your pets is by staying indoors at times when mosquitoes are more likely to be active, at dawn and dusk. Making sure there?s no standing water outside is also a good precautionary measure, as mosquitoes lay eggs in water. Keeping your pets away from dead birds can also prevent infection, as WNV is transmitted by mosquitoes after they?ve come in contact with birds infected with WNV.

With these common-sense measures, you can greatly reduce the risk of infection. Like their pets, most people who become infected with WNV have no symptoms. But if you?ve been bitten by a mosquito and have any of these symptoms, it?s best to see a doctor.

Vietnam Swans write to AFL Chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick regarding ...

The Vietnam Swans have written to AFL Chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick, proposing a Vietnam Vets Day Match. And he is said to find the proposal ?interesting?.

Last month, on 20 July 2012, Vietnam Swans National President, Phil Johns, wrote to AFL Chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick, proposing that the AFL? host a match dedicated to the Vietnam Veterans on Vietnam Veterans? Day, Sunday, 18 August, 2013 (18 August commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966).

Next year is particularly significant because 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam ? a milestone that the Australian Government is reportedly keen to recognise and celebrate.

Mike Fitzpatrick is reportedly ?interested? in the proposal but that any decision would need to be taken by AFL CEO, Andrew Demetriou. Below is an edited extract of the email to the AFL Chairman.

Would a Vietnam Veterans? Day Match detract from the ANZAC Day Blockbuster?

  • The ANZAC Day blockbuster is super successful and its premiere status must be preserved. But a growing number of AFL clubs are questioning why they cannot share the financial and non financial returns of this occasion. A Vietnam Veterans? Day match could potentially complement and help to preserve the status of the ANZAC Day Match by easing the building pressure.
  • 25 April and 18 August are virtually the book ends of the home and away season. These two anniversaries are separated by four months. Playing the Last Post on 25 April confirms that the new AFL season is well and truly underway. The second time in the season that the Last Post is played, it also announces that we have entered the home straight to the AFL Finals.

The man under the spotlight, AFL CEO, Andrew Demetriou, is reportedly the person who would need to make a decision on the 2013 Vietnam Veterans? Day match proposal.

Can a Vietnam Veterans? Day Match be a stand alone event?

  • Australia recognises Vietnam Veterans? Day by a service at the Long Tan Cross at 3.30pm local time. This is 6.30pm Australian Eastern Standard Time ? which opens up the possibility of a live telecast of the minute?s silence at Long Tan. On ANZAC Day at the MCG, 100,000 people speak of hearing nothing more than the Australian and New Zealand flags flapping in the breeze. At (approx) 6.45pm on 18 August, a crowd at an AFL stadium could share a similar experience ? while watching live images of the minute?s silence at the Long Tan Cross on the scoreboard against the darkness of the night?s sky.
  • Sherrin footballs have travelled to armed conflicts before. In Vietnam, the Diggers actually played a thriving competition from 1966-71 that was known as the VFL (Vietnam Football League). These Diggers remain organised and plentiful. They are available for interviews and have numerous photos and records of those times (click here for actual photographs).

Examples of existing connections between the AFL and Vietnam Veterans Day

  • A month ago, the AFL inducted a number of players into its Hall of Fame including Graham Cornes and Glenn Archer. The former is a Veteran. The latter is the son of a Veteran.
  • Nathan Buckley, Lenny Hayes, Chad and Kane Cornes are all sons of Veterans.
  • Glenn James is a Veteran who also played in the Vietnam Football League.
  • Kevin Sheedy?s brother in law, Kenny Earney, is a Veteran.

Examples of high profile, non AFL, Veterans who could potentially support this proposal and bring exposure

  • Former Governor General, Michael Jeffery.
  • Former Deputy Prime Minister, Tim Fischer.
  • Former Head of the Defense Forces and current Qantas Board member, Peter Cosgrove.

Nathan Buckley?s father, Ray (front left) is a Vietnam Veteran. Photo, Swannies? footy clinic with Nathan Buckley and Garry O?Donnell, RMIT University, Saigon, March 2010).

Who would potentially support the proposal?

  • The Australian Government is looking for vehicles to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and Vietnam.
  • The Vietnam Veterans remain hungry for recognition of their contributions and sacrifices. Such an event could provide a significant healing opportunity of national significance.
  • The Defense Department needs living war heroes to help support its current recruitment campaigns ? and the numbers of WWII veterans are dwindling.
  • There is an assumption that issues haven?t quite been resolved for the Vietnam Veterans. A dedicated football match would open the discussion and the public could feel like they were doing something positive just by attending the match or watching it on the television.
  • Businesses with interests in Vietnam could be supportive; eg Stock and Land newspaper reports that ?AWI is hoping to kickstart promotion (of a new office in Vietnam) when the Australian government coordinates celebrations of 40 years of trade and diplomatic relations with Vietnam next year.?

Benefits to the AFL

  • The creation of a blockbuster of national significance.
  • Irrespective of preference to particular sporting codes, a match on Vietnam Veterans? Day could resonate with all Australians ? opening up a dialogue between the AFL and supporters of rugby, soccer etc. This type of blockbuster could be particularly good for the new clubs in the northern states.
  • The Vietnam War is an important and troubled piece of Australian history. A dedicated match could help with the understanding and healing of this period. It would further consolidate the AFL?s pre eminent position in the country of using Australia?s Signature Sport to tackle issues of national significance.
  • By hosting the match in 2013, the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the AFL would be taking the stage on an international issue. That stage could then be used to talk about and explore further the AFL?s international initiatives. While the modern day Australia/Vietnam relationship is dynamic and current, ANZAC Day, is overwhelmingly about Gallipoli and a different era. It?s not about current international relationships and initiatives (I am not saying that Vietnam needs to be the focus of the AFL; rather, it?s just a vehicle to make ?international? more relevant).

Could this be the SCG on Vietnam Veterans? Day, Sunday, 18 August, 2013?

Playing the match

  • The AFL will have an exhaustive list of criteria as to which teams should play and the venue to be used. And, if the concept was repeated in subsequent years, whether venues and teams should be rotated or fixed like the ANZAC Day match. All I suggest is that the pre match formalities would commence at approximately 6.30pm AEST and I would presume that the focus of the match would be outside Victoria, probably focusing initially at least on the rugby states.

Timing, risk and the potential for success

  • If the idea is to fly, it must be 2013 ? the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations. That allows the AFL to safely ?test the waters? by promoting it as a one off event.
  • Next year, 18 April will fall on a Sunday ? so the AFL will already have matches scheduled for that day.
  • After the inaugural match was played, an informed assessment could then be made as to whether the event could be repeated in 2014 and beyond.
  • In 2013, Vietnam Veterans can be recognised while they are still relatively young and plentiful. If done properly, they would become great ambassadors for the event for many years to come giving it the legitimacy that would allow it to grow into a blockbuster.
  • Anecdotally, based upon the way that the three Vietnam Swans? ANZAC Friendship Matches have been received, I have considerable confidence that the concept has enormous potential. Of course, our event is based upon a very small sample ? but it?s of the right people. To read some comments from Veterans and non Veterans, click here. Or view the (low budget) documentary we have just placed on You Tube (eg 16mins where it refers to the VFL competition before leading into an interview three veterans on the couch talking about their experiences).

I think this is an extraordinary opportunity of quite profound significance in terms of Australia?s history. I think that in 2013, the planets are in alignment. And I think the AFL would be a big beneficiary. And all I can do is raise the idea with the decision makers.

Vietnam Swans upodate: Some feedback being received by the Vietnam Swans is that perhaps the AFL match ? still held on 18 August ? could be more inclusive by honouring all veterans regardless of the war/conflict they served in. This would broaden its relevance and recognise the contributions made by diggers in theatres such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Rawanda etc. So, while the ANZAC Day match tends to focus on those who did not return home, a Veterans? Match could focus on those who have returned home.

Insert Coin: Connectify Dispatch lets you put all your internets together into one big internet (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

DNP Conectify lets you put all your internets together into one big internet

If you've ever thought "Hey, my internet is pretty slow, maybe I can get a second line and combine them into one big, zippy connection!" then you're not alone -- those of us who are broadband-deprived need all the help we can get. But a quick tour through Google will show you the difficulty of doing that process, called "bonding," at home. So, Connectify has proposed Dispatch, software that lets you easily combine your WiFi, ethernet and 3G/4G into a single, fat pipe, at a reasonable cost. The company brings along wireless sharing know-how from its Hotspot product to the project, and promises that with every connection you combine, you'll get a corresponding bump in throughput. Also, the system will automatically failover to a good connection if one goes on the fritz, and even switch automatically between WiFi and 3G/4G to maximize speed and save money.

To prove the tech, the company combined all the available open WiFi networks in a neighborhood along with a tethered Verizon mobile phone, and were able to create an impressive 85Mbs connection, as the video below the break shows. So far, Connectify has vacuumed up $30K for Dispatch toward the $50K objective, with about two weeks left. So, if you're desperate for more speed, or just want to trump your neighbor's bandwidth by stealing his WiFi and melding it with your ADSL, check the source to see how to pledge.

A very British beginning - Elcentrocampista

Huelva has a very special place in the history of Spanish Football. For this dusty industrial port close to the south west border with Portugal, saw the birth of the modern game in a country that now dominates the world at club and international level.

Huelva may not have been the first location to experience ex-patriot muddied oafs kicking the bejesus out of a pig?s bladder, but it is where Huelva Recreation Club was founded in 1889. Thus making its direct descendants, Real Club Recreativo de Huelva, El Abuelo del F?tbol Espa?ol, or the Grandfather of Spanish Football.

To find the very beginning of football in Spain, we need to travel back to 1873 and the arrival of the Rio Tinto Mining Company in the hills some forty miles to the north west of Huelva. Phil Ball in his excellent book Morbo, describes how British troops fighting in the Carlist War, played a match in September 1874 against navvies working on the railway link from the mines to Huelva.

Rio Tinto formed a club for the workers in the town that had sprung up around the mines and Club Ingl?s or Rio Tinto FC, as they were to be known would go through various phases and mergers before folding during the Civil War. The rail link reached Huelva in late 1874 and almost immediately, a community of British ex-patriots sprang up in the city. The barrio de los ingles was built to house the great and the good of the mining company and one of them, Dr William Alexander Mackay set up a sports and social club practising in the very English sports of Cricket, Lawn Tennis and Football.

The Recreation Club, as it became known, would participate in matches against ships crews arriving in Huelva and against Club de Regatas de Sevilla. This was a similar club that had been set up in the Andalucian capital by German-Spanish businessman Wilhem Sundheim de la Cueva. Sundhiem, who had been central to attracting British investment in the mines, convened a meeting on 23 December 1889 that would see the formation of Huelva Recreation Club.

Initially a multi-recreational club, footballing activity grew quickly and on 8 March 1890, workers from the Rio Tinto mining company, under the name of Sevilla Foot-ball, played Huelva Recreacion Club. This is the first recorded instance of two clubs playing each other on Spanish soil. Huelva Recreacion Club used fields owned by the local gas company, one in the centre of town, where the current Guardia Civil is located and another near the mouth of the Rio Tinto, very close to the site of their current Estadio Nuevo Colombino.

In December 1890, the Rio Tinto company purchased land just to the south of the city and Huelva Recreation Club set about developing the site. It took 18 months for the ground to be properly developed, but finally on 20 August 1892 the Estadio del Vel?dromo opened for business. As the name suggests, the Vel?dromo was also suitable for cycling and other sports and on occasion, the footballing arm played matches back on the fields owned by the gas company.

By the turn of the twentieth, football began to dominate club activity and the club took up permanent residence at the Estadio del Vel?dromo. A pavilion was added to the site in 1903 and in 1906 the club accepted an invite from Madrid FC to play in a tournament in the Spanish Capital.

The club sought and received royal patronage in 1909 and became known as Real Club Recreativo de Huelva. The Andalucian championship was won on three occasions between 1903 and 1917, but with the rise of professionalism, the club faded in prominence, so much so that when the national leagues were formed in 1928, Recreativo did not receive an invite.

In the years that have followed, Recreativo?s role has been limited to a series of bit-parts, such as the occasional and all to brief visits to La Primera and their appearance in the final of 2003 Copa del Rey. Recreativo now plies it trade in the second division and its home is among the most modern in Spain, but it is a club that takes great pride in its heritage and is only too keen to remind everybody that Huelva is the birthplace of football in Spain.

Michigan Businesses to Benefit from Decrease in Workers ...

Michigan Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Director Steven H. Hilfinger announced today good news for Michigan?s businesses as the pure premium advisory rates for workers? compensation insurance will drop by an average of 7.2 percent.?

This marks the second year in a row with a drop of over 7 percent.

?The decline in the state?s pure premium rate for workers? compensation is great news for Michigan employers and ultimately employees and job seekers,? Hilfinger said. ?By reducing costs, we are making Michigan even more competitive?in attracting and retaining business in our state.??

Workers? Compensation Agency Director Kevin Elsenheimer said the drop in average rates for 2012 is likely due in part to a reduced number of work-related injury claims as a result of well-developed safety programs and a fee schedule which controls medical costs for work-related injuries. Recently enacted reforms to Michigan?s workers? compensation law have had a role.?

?When the Governor signed PA 266 of 2011 reforming the state?s workers? compensation system, there was a hope that costs would go down. Now we know that almost a third of this year?s pure premium reduction results from those changes,? Elsenheimer said.?

The state?s quasi-public Data Collection Agency Board approved the 7.2 percent reduction in the average pure premium rate on July 25, 2012, to be effective January 1, 2013. The rate is the annual yardstick against which private insurance carriers can compare their rate structure for workers? compensation coverage for the coming year.?

The pure premium rates are developed by examining historical loss data reported by insurance carriers for individual job classes and then analyzing how the data will be affected on a year-to-year basis by any law changes or court decisions.?

Column: The national debt, our $10 million-a-minute problem

History might be repeating itself.

Twenty years ago, the presidential campaign was largely focused on the economy, jobs and fiscal responsibility. The key issues in 1992 included how to get the economy growing faster, how to ensure free but fair trade, how to address current and projected deficits and debt burdens, and how best to address the declining trust in government and confidence in the future.

In 2012, we find ourselves in a strikingly similar position. Today, trade policy and currency practices are still a matter of concern and controversy. Even more important, economic growth is weak, federal deficits and debt burdens have grown dramatically, and the public's opinion of government and confidence in the future are near all-time lows. All this at a time when the United States faces a range of serious sustainability challenges that threaten our future position in the world, our future standard of living at home, our long-term national security, and even the future domestic tranquility in our streets.

Critical juncture

America is clearly at a critical crossroad, and the decisions that are made ? or that are failed to be made ? by elected officials in the next few years could well determine whether our collective future is better than our past. As a result, it's critically important that this year's federal elections ? including the presidential, Senate and House races ? once again focus on the economy, jobs and fiscal responsibility.

The state of the economy, combined with escalating deficits and debt levels, virtually guarantees that these issues will be a top priority in the presidential election. This does not, however, ensure that the campaigns will be focused on substance and solutions.

In fact, the spinning and the mud slinging have already begun on both sides, and we risk experiencing more of the same over the next several months. This would not be in the interest of our country or our families.

Columns

In addition to its own editorials, USA TODAY publishes a variety of opinions from outside writers. On political and policy matters, we publish opinions from across the political spectrum.

Roughly half of our columns come from our Board of Contributors, a group whose interests range from education to religion to sports to the economy. Their charge is to chronicle American culture by telling the stories, large and small, that collectively make us what we are.

We also publish weekly columns by Al Neuharth, USA TODAY's founder, and DeWayne Wickham, who writes primarily on matters of race but on other subjects as well. That leaves plenty of room for other views from across the nation by well-known and lesser-known names alike.

The nation's federal debt is now almost $16 trillion, up from about $4 trillion at the end of fiscal 1992 and $5.7 trillion at the end of fiscal 2000.

Even more shocking, total federal liabilities and unfunded promises now exceed $70 trillion, up from $20.4 trillion at the end of fiscal 2000. This represents an almost $50 trillion increase in just 12 years, and this amount is growing by about $10 million a minute! We also face a fiscal cliff at the end of this year.

Level with voters

The numbers are huge and unsustainable. As a result, the Comeback America Initiative (CAI) is partnering with a range of other organizations and individuals on a nationwide fiscal responsibility bus tour.

The purpose is to engage voters on these critical issues by stating the facts, explaining the stakes, outlining the tough choices we face, and discussing a range of non-partisan fiscal reforms that should be able to gain bipartisan support. All in the name of keeping America great and the American dream alive for our children, grandchildren and future generations of Americans.

The truth is, a number of common sense reforms have already been proposed and supported by members of both parties. For example, we'll be discussing bipartisan ideas such as "no budget, no pay," which would stipulate that if Congress fails to pass a budget and required spending bills by the end of a fiscal year, the members would not get paid until they fulfilled this responsibility. We'll highlight specific reforms to our major social insurance programs, such as changing current benefit formulas and premium support models to provide greater relative support to lower income individuals. We'll also talk about ideas for reining in health care costs, such as changing the way we pay for medical care ? moving away from fee-for-service and toward "outcomes based" payments ? and reforming our medical malpractice system. Yet another area for discussion we'll explore is how to reform our tax code to make it simpler, fairer and generate more revenue by closing various tax "loopholes."

We need to hear from both presidential candidates, as well as candidates for other federal offices, regarding how they propose to address these issues. The American people have neither the time nor the tolerance for any more demagoguery and partisan sniping. The stakes for this country are far too high.

H. Ross Perot Sr. was a candidate for president of the United States 20 years ago. David M. Walker, a former U.S. Comptroller General, is now CEO of The Comeback America Initiative. You can find out more about the bus tour and the ways voters and the news media can press candidates for substantive answers at10MillionaMinute.com.

Dee Snider to Paul Ryan: Stop playing my song

Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider has asked Republican vice presidential running mate Paul Ryan's camp not to play his hit song, "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Ryan spokesman Brandon Buck wrote a pithy email in response: "We're Not Gonna Play It anymore."

Snider says in a statement that he does not support Ryan and denounced use of the song, an anthemic 1984 hit for the glam metal band.

It joins a long list of songs that musicians have asked politicians to stop using. Most recently, the rock band Silversun Pickups asked likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney to stop using the song "Panic Switch" last week. The campaign said the song's use was inadvertent.

How To Assess Your Total Commercial Real Estate Needs | Key ...

Industrial property and other commercial properties are going up on the market all the time, but this type of property does not get preferential listings like regular homes. Read on to learn the best ways to find commercial properties for sale or lease.

Look for people who are eager to make sales. Find sellers, particularly those that want to get rid of a property below the market?s value. Until you locate a great deal, nothing moves one way or the other when it comes to real estate. Once you identify a great deal, it is usually offered by a seller who is eager and very motivated to sell.

It is important to be aware of all of the environmental issues and obligations related to your property. For instance, your property could be endangered by the presence of hazardous waste. As a property owner, it is your responsibility to handle these issues, regardless of their origin.

TIP! Commercial loans require a higher down payment than your typical residential loan. The most commonsense way to obtain commercial financing is by checking out different lending agencies and by asking around regarding the best types of investments.

Don?t feel scared to investigate your broker?s personality! For example, ask them what they consider to be success, and what constitutes failure. You need to know how they actually measure their results. Look for online ratings or complaints. Work with a real estate broker only if you share the same beliefs and strategies.

It is important that your financial records are up to date when you are looking at purchasing commercial real estate. If you don?t have them, you won?t be able to prove fiscal responsibility to the lenders, and it?s likely that you won?t get the financing you need.

If you are investing in real estate, consider going big. If you were considering purchasing a five-unit building, recognize that managing fifty units is no more difficult than five. That many units still need commercial financing like the larger ones do, and the larger ones generally cost less for every unit.

TIP! When drawing up a letter of intent, try to solicit agreement on big issues first and leave smaller issues for later rounds of negotiations. It will be less stressful to negotiate and can also make it easier to come to terms on the smaller things as well.

Don?t ever underestimate the value of the relation between you and lenders, be them private or investors. Some commercial property is never listed, but can still be sold. A tight relationship will give you inside information and knowledge about how to access more property.

Make sure you know what kind of environment your property is located. It is your responsibility to ensure that your property is free from environmental waste or safety hazards. Are you considering a purchase of property in an area that is prone to flooding? Think over your options again. It?s possible to get information specific to the locale you?re considering by contacting environmental assessment agencies in that area.

A good plan, and rent considerations, will be important to consider when getting a new lease. Decide the exact amount of rent you want to accrue each month prior to having even a first conversation with a possible renter. As such, you will more easily attain the goals you established.

TIP! If inspections are part of the deal on your real estate, be sure to check all the credentials of the hired inspectors. You should particularly watch for people involved in insect or pest control.

Locating the right type of commercial real estate is only half the battle here. Information can help you find

Hamilton, of the Cincinnati Reds' Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos, stole three bases to bring his season total to 146 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Montgomery Biscuits, Tuesday, Aug. 21, breaking the record for steals by minor league teams affiliated with big league organizations set by Vince Coleman in 1983 with 145 for Macon in the Class A South Atlantic League. PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) ? Cincinnati Reds minor leaguer Billy Hamilton bolted to his record 146th stolen base of the season and kept running Tuesday night, swiping four in the first game of Double-A doubleheader.

Hamilton added his 147th steal in the final inning of Pensacola's 4-2 loss to Montgomery. Hamilton stole 104 in the first half of the season with Class A Bakersfield, then was promoted to the Southern League.

Hamilton broke the record for steals by minor league teams affiliated with big league organizations set by Vince Coleman in 1983 with 145 for Macon in the Class A South Atlantic League.

The modern major league record was set by Rickey Henderson with 130 in 1982.

Hamilton stole second base in the first inning, then swiped second and third in the third inning to eclipse Coleman's mark. Hamilton made a headfirst slide for the record-breaker and Pensacola manager Jim Riggleman, who was coaching third base, gave him a hearty handshake as the crowd rewarded the speedster with a standing ovation.

Hamilton's teammates came out of the dugout to applaud him. Ryan LaMarre, who was batting at the time for the Blue Wahoos, came down the third base line to congratulate him.

The 21-year-old Hamilton has been caught stealing 33 times this season. He has forced many errors and balks while on the bases.

Hamilton has played 120 games this year. Coleman played 113 games during his record-setting season and was caught stealing 31 times.

Will Apple soon be worth one trillion dollars?

Will Apple soon be worth one trillion dollars?

The value of a company is whatever people are willing to pay for it. And for public companies like Apple, that value equates to an open market stock price times however many shares there are in existence. Street lingo for this is market capitalization, or simply ?market cap?.

Apple is the world?s most valuable company. Period. Not just among technology companies, but among all companies in the world. Apple is worth a staggering $624 billion as I write this paragraph. It?s stock price is hovering around $673 and since there are 937 million shares outstanding, multiplying those two numbers together gives us that immense market cap.

To hit a $1 trillion market cap, the stock price needs to climb to $1067, which is 59% higher than today?s price. Of course, one trillion dollars is an arbitrary number. But lots of public companies are worth over $100 billion, and the next zero to be added gets you to a trillion. So it?s psychologically important. Will Apple be the first company to achieve it?

I?ve said before that I think they will. Back in February, when I said, "I?m in the camp that believes Apple will become the world?s first trillion dollar company", the stock price was about to reach a new high of $500. We?re already up 35% since that date. And while the stock price gyrates, and Wall Street gets upset with Apple?s latest financial guidance (yet again), the growth continues.

Apple?s creation of iOS has single handedly transformed the company from a Mac + iPod business into a mobile computing business. In the last year (Street folks call this ?trailing twelve months?), Apple generated revenue of $149 billion. iPhone and iPad sales account for the majority of this.

China is one factor fueling Apple?s growth. On the company?s Q2 conference call, held back in April, Tim Cook talked about how sales in China had grown threefold year over year. China had gone from nowhere to 20% of total company revenues in one year.

As much as the iPhone has driven huge sales, I am honestly more excited about the iPad. Compared to a laptop computer, the iPad is infinitely more portable, always on, delivers much better battery life, and costs a lot less. Consuming content on it is much more comfortable. Parents worry less about their kids getting their grimy hands on it, or spilling a bit of apple juice onto its surface. In education, it offers to dramatically reduce the cost of textbooks. In short, the iPad, for many people, is superior to a laptop in many use cases.

Despite Android dominating the smartphone market in China, the iPad has over 72% share of the Chinese tablet market. But this is still a tiny market, with Apple selling less than 3 million iPads last quarter in a country with well over a billion people.

The tablet market, including iPad, is also small on a global basis when you compare it to the PC market. Apple sold only 17 million iPads last quarter (Q3 fiscal 2012). Annualize this and you get 68 million. The PC market is closer to 500 million units. Industry analysts expect units sold in the tablet market to exceed the PC market by 2015. I?m not sure if the date will turn out to be accurate or not, but I have no hesitation in adopting the view that tablets will outsell PCs at some point in the next few years.

This is the revolution that matters, and Apple owns it. Look back to the Mac vs. PC battle of decades past. Apple always held onto about 6% of the market. But today, in mobile, they?re set to hold onto a much larger chunk. Who knows what the percentage share will settle at, but I think we can all agree that it will be a lot more than 6%.

Right now, Apple has held onto its pricing power, to boot. How has it done this? Part of it is sexy hardware and great software, as usual. But the real reason comes down to ecosystem. iPad, iPhone, iPod, Mac, iTunes, iOS apps and iCloud all play well together, by design. Apple has a strangle hold on its users, even though we (as users) probably think of it as more of a cuddle, less of a choke.

So how high can Apple?s stock go? That really depends upon the time frame, I suppose. But if Apple can actually own 30-60% of the mobile computing market while hanging onto its fat profit margins, then we?re going to look back at the one trillion dollar market cap goal and laugh. For investors ... laughing all the way to the bank.
