Mary Tyler Moore To Have Elective Brain Surgery To Remove Benign Tumor

There were tabloid rumors in recent years that actress Mary Tyler Moore had been diagnosed as having a benign tumor, called a meningioma, in the membranes that cover her brain.

Today, as People magazine first reported, the 74-year-old star's publicist announced that she has "decided to proceed with [a] fairly routine procedure" to have it removed. There's no word yet on when the surgery will be done.

Earlier today, the syndicated Rachel Ray Show aired an appearance taped on May 5 by Richards' TV co-star from the '60s, Dick Van Dyke. And who should show up to "surprise" him, but Moore herself.

As Van Dyke told Morning Edition for a story that NPR aired on Tuesday, he was probably a little in love with Moore back in those days ? though they didn't act on what was probably a mutual attraction.
