Women skied wearing bikinis and men wore board shorts Saturday as Crystal Mountain opened for skiing in July for only the second time in its history, a spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman said 543 people skied and snowboarded Saturday down the Green Valley slopes. An additional 721 onlookers rode the Mount Rainier Gondola and enjoyed temperatures in the high 60s, marketing director Tiana Enger said.
The Mount Rainier Gondola and Green Valley also will be open today and Monday, the Fourth of July, for skiing, as well as next Saturday and Sunday, Enger said.
?It was kind of a rare thing to be able to strip down and ski,? she said. ?Hopefully, everybody wore plenty of sunscreen.?
More than 600 inches of snow has fallen since Crystal opened Nov. 19, breaking the previous record of 598 inches in 1999. That season was the only other time Crystal?s slopes were open in July ? including July 4, according to resort records.
